GPS Tracking Traps Bike Thieves

With gas prices on the rise, many people have sought out alternative modes of transportation. Although a GPS tracking device can help you make the most of your gas dollars by allowing you to monitor and curb gas-wasting driving habits, you can still use a GPS tracking device even if you decide not to drive a car.

The on-campus police force at the University of Wisconsin has made good use of GPS tracking system technology by putting GPS tracking devices on bicycles that they are leaving around the university campus. Since last spring, the “bait bikes” have more then proven themselves. One sergeant said that they were able to call the program a success after only about six weeks. The initiative worked so well, they bought more GPS devices after that first six weeks.

Officers are able to locate the stolen bait bikes using the internet within minutes of a bike being stolen. They are able to locate the stolen bicycles quickly and swoop in quickly to arrest the culprits.

Rocky Mountain Tracking has an array of tracking devices to remotely monitor subjects, vehicles, and assets of interest from an office or surveillance vehicle. You can get up to the minute alerts via e-mail, cell phone or through web-based monitoring. You can use a GPS tracking device to investigate sensitive documents and packages, as well as situations where the exact location of a subject is critical.

Depending on the type of GPS system you  purchase, you can track your equipment on a regular basis or you can purchase an on demand system that only tells you the location when you need it. You can even choose GPS tracking equipment that will tell you where your property is in the event that a thief takes it and cuts the battery cable.

You can go to the Rocky Mountain website to learn more about how GPS can assist with vehicle recovery and asset tracking.

  1. Hi Jin, we are GPS tracker manufactures. Our bicycle GPS tracking system is retails approx $170. http://www.integratedtrackers.com/GPSTrack/

  2. Cristi,

It is possible to place the device in metal containment and run the antenna outside of it. However, a bike frame is very small. A better solution may be to cut the top off a bicycle water bottle and plant a portable tracker in the bottle, then secure the top back on the bottle. No one will know it’s there.

it’s not working from within a metal container. ok, no problem, but WHY can’t they make an small antenna that you keep outside somewhere, and the circuit in th bikes frame !?!??!?! MORONS !

  4. Hi Jason,

There’s really no GPS available on the market today that will track within complete metal containment. You could consider placing a device under the seat, in carry-on pack, or in a watter bottle.
