Shenandoah National Park is using virtual GPS rangers to dispense information and help guide visitors through the park. For a fee, park visitors can rent a GPS Ranger and explore areas of the park at their own pace, rather than have to follow the time constraints of a tour led by a human ranger.

They key to this innovative approach for exploring the park is GPS tracking technology. If the park simply wanted to provide an audio soundtrack for visitors to take along as they walked around, they could do that, but it would be difficult to pair pertinent information with specific spots in the park. Because of the GPS locating system that is a part of the GPS Ranger, the tracking device knows where a park visitor is at any given time. In this case, location information is used to let the machine know which part of the previously recorded ranger talk to play.

Park visitors have to pre-select a program for the area they are visiting. When a visitor stops at a certain point in the park, an image of a human ranger will pop up on the screen of the GPS device thanks to the GPS Ranger’s GPS locator. The video of the human ranger gives facts and information about the user’s current location.
