GPS Tracking Provides Useful Info for Parents

Earlier in the week, we discussed how “GPS Tracking Provides Useful Evidence.” For those who are investigating crimes, GPS tracking devices can sometimes give them the edge they need to bring some criminals to justice. For example, evidence from GPS tracking allowed authorities to nab an arsonist who set a dozen fires.

On the flip side, some people, like Shaun Malone of California, found that a GPS tracking device provided the information they needed to be declared innocent of an infraction.

Because they can record actions such as braking, signaling and the use of seatbelts,  GPS tracking devices can be a great asset in the unfortunate event of an accident.

However, one need not wait until something unpleasant occurs to use a GPS tracking device. Instead, you can use a GPS tracking device to do what you can to try to prevent accidents and avoid traffic infractions.

In the case of teenage driver Shaun Malone, who is mentioned above, this is exactly what his parents wanted to do. Malone’s  stepfather, a retired law enforcement official, installed a GPS tracking device purchased from Rocky Mountain Tracking on the car Malone drives to monitor Malone’s driving habits.

A tracking device like the RMT Rover allows parents to keep track of how fast their teen is driving, if their teen is using a seat belt and it will give you information on where they have driven, in real time. Once you have this information, then as a parent, you can take the action you think is appropriate if you find that your teenager does not have safe driving habits.

However, you may be pleasantly surprised and find that your teenager consistently wears a seatbelt, does not exceed the speed limit and does no sudden braking. You may want to take some action in that situation too. Good driving habits are their own reward, but parental encouragement can boost confidence and cement the resolver to be a safe driver.

Whatever the case, when you install a teen tracking device, this means that you won’t have to do any guesswork about your teen’s driving habits. You cannot assume your child is or is not driving recklessly. A GPS tracking device can give you the information you need.

GPS Tracking Provides Useful Evidence

The L.A. Times recently reported that more and more people are using GPS tracking devices and they had some eye-opening statistics. Four years ago, everyday citizens used an estimated 550,000 GPS tracking units. This year people are using about 15 million tracking units. That is a big jump in the numbers of people using GPS tracking devices.

As a society our discussions about the use GPS tracking technology and the protection of privacy are going to continue for quite a while. Any device that can provide the kind of information that GPS tracking devices provide will be a point of contention for some people, at some point.

Because GPS tracking devices can record the comings, goings, and driving patterns of a car, they are being used to convict or release those accused of crimes that vary from speeding to homicide.

We’ve reported on the case involving 18-year-old Shaun Malone in Sonoma County, California. Malone fought a speeding ticket using evidence from a GPS tracking device that his stepfather bought from Rocky Mountain Tracking and installed on his car. During the trial, an expert vouched for the accuracy of the GPS tracking device. Dr. Stephen Heppe said on the stand that the Rocky Mountain Tracking’s device was “very accurate,” and that it released instantaneous, as opposed to averaged, data.

On the other side of the spectrum, GPS tracking units have provided the data needed to convict people of crimes. Sometimes the GPS tracking units that suspects have purchased and installed on their own cars end up being their undoing. In other cases, law enforcement officials have placed GPS units on a suspect’s vehicle to gather evidence.

GPS tracking can aid in investigative or surveillance activities for criminal and civil cases. Law enforcement officers and private investigators can use GPS tracking devices for surveillance and pinpoint the exact location of a person or item of interest.
Privacy experts are worried, but so far the courts have looked favorably on the advantages the GPS tracking technology can offer to those doing investigative tracking. In 2007, the U.S. 7th Circuit Court of Appeals decided that using GPS tracking in a cases involving someone suspected of making illegal drugs did not violate the 4th Amendment’s protections against unreasonable search or seizure.

GPS Tracking Monitors Rescued Whales

Although you may have heard someone compare someone or something that seemed to be laying around without moving as being akin to a ‘beached whale,’ you should know that this condition is actually fatal for whales.

Recently in Australia, authorities decided to use GPS satellite tracking technology to monitor eleven whales that survived this perilous condition. Of 64 whales that were part of a mass stranding last week, these eleven were the only ones that managed to survive and leave northwest Tasmania for the water. Scientist mounted an admirable rescue effort, so they would like to track the progress of the surviving whales.

www.RMTracking.com Thanks to the GPS tracking units that were attached to the eleven survivors, the scientists now know that the whales, who were all part of the same group, managed to get back together. The GPS tracking units indicate that they whales are making good time and not faltering in their efforts to get back to sea. One spokesperson from the Department of Primary Industries and Water stated that This was the first time that GPS tracking technology was being used in this way in the southern hemisphere.

Just as scientists are able to pinpoint the exact the location of the whales because of GPS tracking devices, you can also use GPS tracking devices to pinpoint the location of a stranded employee or loved one. Or, a GPS tracking device could be used to pinpoint your exact location, should you happen to need some help.

You can rely on the hardware and GPS tracking devices sold by Rocky Mountain Tracking. GPS location and data retrieval is a high tech process, and although there are hundreds and hundreds of units on the market, many of them are not very reliable. Rocky Mountain Tracking rejects 98.2% of tracking units we test because they don’t hold up to our punishing 15 point quality check. When you need to find someone fast, you want to know that the tracking device you’ve purchased will get the job done. With Rocky Mountain Tracking, you not only get top of the line equipment, you also get continued customer service. We have worked with the police and emergency personnel to locate drivers who were in need of assistance.

Weather forecasters have said that the upcoming winter may be rather harsh. Using a GPS tracking device means that you will know how to locate the people who are most important to you should they get lost in a storm.

Using GPS to Track Repossessed Vehicles

No doubt you have been hearing a lot about foreclosure lately, but what you have not been hearing about as much is the rising number of car repossessions. In fact, one news source reported that the number of car repossessions is the highest it has been in 10 years.

www.RMTracking.com
What you also may not know is that the law makes provision for the original owner of a car that has been repossessed to get their vehicle back. Laws may vary based on your jurisdiction, but if your car is about to be repossessed you do have options. You are supposed to get a certain number of days to pay off what you owe. You are also supposed to be notified as to when the vehicle is going up for sale.

But what happens if the bank and the repo company don’t go by the book? What if you are not given the notifications that you were supposed to get? And supposed that you have a change of fortune and find that you can afford to pay what is necessary to keep your car? If your car has been repossessed and you don’t know where it is, how can you make sure you can pay what you owe or even bid for it?

“If these vehicles had our Smart Track GPS tracker device installed in them, there is a much better chance the vehicles could be recovered,” says Brad Borst, President of Rocky Mountain Tracking.  “With our Smart Track, there are no monthly fees; a customer only pays a few dollars if they have to recover the vehicle.”

Smart Track has already worked on recovering vehicles that were stolen; it can also help you track down your vehicle if it has been repossessed. The geo-fence reports each time your asset moves in or out of a predetermined area from 1/8th of a mile to 300 miles. You can set up to two geo fences at one time.

Smart track provides on-demand web-based vehicle tracking and vehicle Recovery. With the Smart Track, you don’t pay if you don’t track. Locate commands update the current position of your vehicle. One locate is used each time the command is sent. The number of available locates depends on the account you choose, plus locates can be shared with all of your vehicles. So when you decide on live tracking with the Smart Track vehicle tracking system there are no monthly fees.

Run Your Business More Efficiently with GPS

Reading an article online, I read one about one business owner who had a great outlook on using GPS fleet tracking. We already know how great GPS tracking can be, but we are also aware that there are some skeptics out there. This person addressed the doubts that some may have by stating that install GPS tracking systems on company vehicles was not about second-guessing or trying to entrap employees; it is about running a business smoothly and efficiently.

www.RMTracking.comwww.RMTracking.comwww.RMTracking.com

For one thing, GPS car tracking technology allows you to validate service calls. There will be no need to guess. By simply looking at the history of a vehicle you can quickly tell when it arrived and how long it was at a particular service call because there is a clear record. This can work in an employees favor.

Unfortunately, although we try to operate with from the standpoint that the customer is always right, that does not mean that the customer does not make mistakes. With GPS tracking technology, you can get to the bottom or any alleged discrepancies and quickly settle disputes. This prevents fraudulent claims. With a good digital log you can demonstrate that your fleet was where it needed to be when it needed to be there.

Having a GPS tracking system in place will also be a great asset when it comes to billing. Even people who love working with numbers, so not relish the thought of trying to come up with billing statements without sufficient information. GPS tracking systems help amass a digital log so you can calculate time and fuel costs accurately, eliminating estimates and assumptions.

And with Rocky Mountain Tracking’s comprehensive customer support, an investment in GPS tracking really pays off, You not only have the tools to run your business more efficiently, you will know that you have a place to turn to should you need any help.

Get firsthand knowledge of  what some Rocky Mountain Tracking customers already know: fleet tracking means better fleet management and this equals an increase in more profit. One study conducted earlier this year, showed that some companies find a 42% increase in work order completion. A possible 42% increase is already good news, but it looks even better when researchers compared it to the 12% increase in work order completion they found with companies that did not use GPS tracking systems to manage their fleets.

Ga. Lawmaker Wants to Outlaw Hidden GPS Devices

Last week news outlets reported that one lawmaker in Georgia wants to make it illegal for people to use hidden GPS devices and some private investigators are concerned.

Right now it is perfectly legal to track a person using a GPS device that is placed on a car, even if it is placed in such a way that it is not visible. You can put a hidden GPS device on a car, provided that you install this GPS device in a public place.

The proposal in Georgia would make it illegal to place a GPS tracking device on a person’s car without that person’s consent, whether the device was installed in private or public. This law, if it passed, would effect private citizens and would in on way keep the police from using GPS tracking devices. The lawmaker who is proposing this legislation was at one time a prosecutor, so he is familiar with the workings of law enforcement.

Private investigators think that this may affect their work. One private investigator said that not being able to use GPS tracking devices could possibly put members of his profession in danger. Now, they can monitor activity from a computer. Should it turn out that private investigators cannot used GPS tracking devices, investigative tracking would have to do more in-person surveillance.

www.RMTracking.com
Can you imagine what would happen if you learned that one of the most crucial tools for your job was going to be taken away? Yes, the old gumshoes used to tail and track people without technology, but that does not mean they would not have welcomed some technological assistance. Plus, this is a new era. Investigators have no tools and so do criminals. If an investigator can avoid having to chase after someone, it is probably in their best interest to do so.

GPS tracking devices help the police and private investigators make informed decisions and get the solid evidence they need to close their cases. They can receive up to the minute alerts via e-mail, cell phone or through web-based monitoring. Getting instant notification of when a subject is within a certain proximity to a predetermined location can make a big a difference when it comes to closing a case because timing is everything.

GPS tracking devices like Rocky Mountain Tracking’s PT-200 have become one of the most effective tools commonly used among law enforcement and private investigators.

GPS: From Cell Phone Tracking to Asset Protection

As long as they are on and functioning, cell phones can be traced because they emit signals to the closest antenna tower. Sometimes cell phone calls are traced, but cell phone tracking works even when there is no call being made on a cell phone.

Last month, police in California suspected that a man in his 20s had kidnapped his underage girlfriend and they used cell phone tracking technology to find the man in question.

Apparently, the underage girl, two of her friends and her boyfriend were all in a car when  the boyfriend made them go off the road. He later forced the underage girl to leave the car and to get into his car, which was apparently nearby.

Emergency cell phone tracking technology was used in the efforts to track the man and his underage girlfriend. The police did this by tracking the cell phones of both the man under suspicion and the underage girl he allegedly kidnapped.

And earlier this month, police in Tennessee used cell phone tracking to catch up with an eighteen year old woman who was running away with a minor. The two were found because their cell phone calls were traced.

In the cases mentioned above, the police were looking for people. And these people carried cell phones and made calls on these cell phones that gave clues that pointed to their whereabouts. But what happens when what you are looking for is not someone but something?

You may not be a member of the police force, but you can still use GPS tracking technology to find things that have gotten away from you. People carry cell phones that can be traced, but your property and equipment are not able to carry on conversations. Still, you can use a GPS tracking device to keep up with your property and to be informed of where it is at all times.

A GPS vehicle tracking device will do the necessary communicating if your vehicle is taken or someone is trying to make off with your construction equipment. When you are tracking your property using a GPS device, you are able to obtain raw data from a number of satellites. Visit Rocky Mountain Tracking and speak to one of our customer service representatives to choose the satellite tracking device that will work best for you.

Defective GPS? Never! Defective Cars? That’s Another Story!

www.RMTracking.com Sergei Lemberg, an attorney who practices lemon law is sitting in the guest blogger’s chair today.

Considering they use such advanced technology, it’s amazing that GPS tracking systems are so darned reliable. But while GPS systems almost never conk out, the same can’t be said for the vehicles they accompany.

After taking the plunge and buying a new car, it can be devastating to find out that the vehicle has problems that seemingly can’t be fixed. Everyday, I listen to the frustrations of clients who have taken their new cars in for repair time and time again, only to have the problem resurface. Thankfully, lemon law lawyers across the country can count on a variety of state and federal laws to help their clients get justice.

Basically, there are three things people need to know about lemon laws. First, every state has a different lemon law on the books, so it’s important to know the criteria that define a lemon in your state. For example, some states cover only new vehicles, while others cover both new and used cars. Similarly, some states only cover vehicles for the first year or 12,000 miles on the odometers, while other states have a longer coverage period.

Second, consumers need to be conscientious in their documentation, as this can be a tremendous help in establishing a case. You should jot down the days, times, and circumstances when your car has a problem; the days you take it in for service; and notes about any conversations you have with the dealer or manufacturer. You should also keep copies of written records, like repair orders and correspondence.

Finally, with the help of a lemon law attorney, consumers should be able to get either a refund or replacement for a defective vehicle. Even if your car doesn’t meet the stringent definitions of your state’s lemon law, you can often get a financial settlement by using other state and federal laws designed to protect consumers.

So, while you’ll most likely never run across a GPS tracking device lemon, it’s good to know that the law is on your side when you buy a new vehicle.

Using GPS Tracking to Map Pet Movement

Cats seem to be popping up everywhere these days. Not that cats ever really go out of style, but with websites dedicated to pictures of cats and top-selling books based on these websites, it just seems like we are seeing more cats these days.

And some people are very interested in finding out just what cats are seeking. One architect in Britain decided to use a GPS tracking device to find out just where his cat goes every day. This enterprising architect has even compiled the data he gets from using a GPS tracking system to trace his cat’s movements to show that the animal tends to follow certain patterns over time.

Those of you who allow your cats to roam and do not keep them in house, probably find that your pets do not go very far. Still, some pets do veer somewhat off the beaten path from time to time and you have to go out in search of them. By using a GPS tracking device, you can make sure that you do not have to spend too much of your time out searching for your pet.

Statistics show there are approximately 273 million pets in this country, with 10 million of them ending up lost or in shelters each year. With the weather getting increasingly colder, you will not want your pet to get lost and you will not want to have to spend a lot of time outside trying to find your pet. The PT-200 uses RMTracking’s high-powered, full-featured NavIQ software to reliably report your pet’s whereabouts at all times, so there’s no need to worry if your dog or cat gets out of your backyard. NavIQ reports a pet’s location in real time, proving far more effective at recovering lost animals than putting up posters or canvassing the area to bring a beloved pet home again.

www.RMTracking.com Visit Rocky Mountain Tracking on the web and check out the PT-200 for Pet Tracking. This device is most commonly used for dogs, but it works for cats and other small pets too. The PT-200 is small enough that a pet may not even notice it is there, tracking his/her every move. The PT-200’s rechargeable battery will last up to 21 days without being recharged. The accuracy of the device is within about 3 to 16 feet.
