GPS Tracking Helps Parents Track Teens

January 23rd, 2009

Teen drivers often lack the maturity needed to avoid dangerous situations. Aside from bad driving habits, teens often tell their parents they are going to one destination and go somewhere else. Parents now have a tool to assist in tracking their teens. GPS tracking systems included in many cars when they are manufactured and aftermarket systems that the parents can have installed help parents track teens.

GPS Parents who are more trusting of their teens may not ever use these devices. Of course, if a teen misses his/her curfew, activation of the GPS tracking device can allow parents to learn where their teen driver is at that moment and if the vehicle is in motion. This type of technology can help eliminate a great deal of worry on the part of parents.

Other parents who do not have as much faith in the maturity of their teen drivers can have the GPS tracking device activated as soon as the teen leaves home and can track the teen’s movements via computer until the teen returns.

Through the use of GPS tracking technology, parents now have the ability to follow all of a teen’s movements when driving, and more sophisticated systems can even track vehicle speeds during the trip. This makes it possible for parents to monitor and correct poor habits without having to be right at the side of the teen. It also helps parents to monitor where their teens are traveling and be assured that teens go where they say they are going.

One drawback to using this type of GPS tracking is the possibility of the teen changing vehicles somewhere along the way and going to forbidden destinations. Use of GPS tracking is not, however, limited to vehicles. Cell phones and other personal devices have GPS tracking systems built in that can be activated upon request of the parents that will travel with the teen even if he/she changes to another vehicle.

In the past, parents often had to worry about where their teens were and what they were doing when they left home. Teens driving the family car were especially worrisome because they often lack the maturity and experience needed to deal with certain situations that can arise. GPS tracking technology has made it possible for parents to track their teens driving habits and where their teens are going when they leave home.

    Jacob,
Let me ask you a question. Is it a breach of privacy to track a new born baby in the hospital for safety? Are you not responsible for the baby or child after a certain age. What is that age? The child’s parents or guardian is responsible for the child until the age of 18.

You said, if the parents question where the child / teen is, they shouldn’t let them drive. So, you would rather suspend the privilege of driving over teaching them to drive?

I think this is a total breach of privacy and trust on the kids part. If the parents dont think that the kid is going to be where theyre suposed to be then they should drive the kid there instead of leting then drive themselves.
