If you work long hours during the day, you probably know how hard it is to get into a normal exercise routine. This is precisely why most people take to the city and country streets during the evening hours. Whether you enjoy an after work run or bike ride make sure that you are exercising with caution.

Often, those driving late at night are a lot less aware than daytime drivers are. Not only is it harder to see runners and cyclists on late night streets, but drivers tend to be tired and inattentive after sunset. The best way to avoid an accident of any kind is to be adequately prepared to hit the pavement.

Cyclists will find a large quantity of reflective clothing, bicycle decals, reflectors, and reflective helmets are available in almost every bike shop. In addition, night time cyclists should pay extra attention to crossroads, intersections, and busy street corners.

Runners will find a similar assortment of reflective clothing, shoes, wrist and arm bands, and jackets in running shops all over the world. It is never a good idea to go for a night time run without reflective clothing.

Both runners and cyclists should also avoid listening to music while running at night. Sometimes music can be distracting, and distraction can mean a serious accident. Be aware of oncoming lights at night, and watching out for cars that might be backing out (or pulling into) driveways.

It’s also a great idea to carry a GPS device on you if possible. These small devices might not seem important, but they will help emergency crews and authorities to locate you if an accident should occur. In addition, you should also get into the habit of telling someone what route you intend to take. This way, you can be found if you do not return in a timely fashion.

There’s nothing better than enjoying the great outdoors after a stressful day at work. Running and cycling are excellent ways to keep your heart rate up while helping you to de-stress. However, there are far too many night time accidents involving runners and cyclists.

The night time roads are not the same as the roads that you may travel during the daylight hours. Almost every running and cycling accident can be prevented if you take the time to prepare for your night time routine before you lace up your shoes or jump on your bike.
