As technology advances, GPS tracking devices are becoming more and more sophisticated. They are also becoming smaller and easier to conceal inside items that are being tracked as two men in Carlstadt, New Jersey found out.

These two men were caught stealing bottles of perfume and cologne from the shipping company that they work for. The perfume bottles were all from the House of Creed, a very expensive fragrance brand that is very popular among Hollywood’s top stars. Some Creed perfume sells for as much as $130 per ounce.

The high expense of the product explains why the company began tracking their fragrances. Over the past year, several retailers had been missing some perfume bottles from their shipment. To find out what had happened to the missing fragrances, very small GPS tracking devices were attached to random bottles of the Creed perfume and cologne.

It did not take the company too long to find one of their tracked perfume bottles that did not follow the shipping route. After notifying the police, the real time tracker was used to find the culprits. The tracking device led them to Carlos Mayta, and the police discovered 17 bottles of the missing Creed perfume in his possession. After being caught, Mayta incriminated his accomplice, Arturo Vasquez who had stolen 30 bottles. The men were charged with theft of movable property

The House of Creed, a French perfume company founded in 1760, must have been very glad to discover the cause of their missing fragrances. The estimated value of the stolen fragrances that the police found is $11,000.

Companies like the House of Creed with expensive products that are easy to steal are starting to track their shipments with tiny GPS tracking devices on their products. Each shipment goes through so many hands from the time that it leaves the factory to the time when it is placed on the retailer’s shelf for purchase that it would be very difficult to track down the missing products without the help of GPS tracking devices.

As in this case, thousands of dollars of merchandise goes missing all the time, and the company’s well being and reputation depends on the discovery of the thieves and the recovery of the stolen products. This kind of GPS tracking might be a little expensive, but it can clearly save the company greatly in the long run.
