When discussing delivery business, we often think of cars, trucks and vans. But, what about those operations that work on two wheels? We are speaking of bicycles and motorcycles. These short-range delivery operations are run very efficiently. Mostly with cell phones that allow the delivery persons to keep in touch with the main office while they are on their runs.![]()
But, what if there was a better way? What if those who made the deliveries could be tracked while on their routes, via GPS tracking devices? What if they could be tracked by one person from one PC? What advantages would there be for the businesses that operate in this manner?
Just as large fleet delivery operations benefit from GPS tracking devices, the same can be applied here too.
In-transit location
While bicycles and motorcycles are in transit, they can be tracked in real-time in order to keep track of location. It would be better to use battery powered GPS tracking devices and affix them to the actual delivery person. In this manner, the complete route can be monitored, not just the ride on the vehicle up to the external door of the business.
In-transit direction of travel
In maintaining close contact with delivery activities, direction of travel can also be monitored to make sure that the correct routes are being followed. In addition, if a business calls in a pick-up or deliver while the delivery routes are being run, then the closest delivery person can be contacted to make a change in their route to include the new call. In this manner, customers can be served better.
In-transit speed
Obeying speed limits is not as much of an issue for bicycles as it is for motorcycles, but it is something that must be monitored. The reason is that safety is increased when laws are obeyed. Motorcycle and bicycle drivers have a responsibility to maintain compliance to known laws and company rules.
Verification of deliveries
A nice touch to monthly billing is to add a report showing all deliveries with the times and dates. This sends a message to customers that service is important and their satisfaction is the number one priority. Also, you can use these reports to validate compliance to business contracts. They are admissible as evidence in a court of law if needed.
Delivery businesses on two wheels can run better and more profitable with GPS tracking devices incorporated into their operations. The cost is low and the benefits are priceless.
