Thanks to new GPS technology, it is getting harder and harder for thieves and crooks to get away without being caught. Recently, a seven-man cargo theft gang in Toronto, Canada recently discovered this.
Crime Prevention with GPS Tracking
The cargo theft gang attacked a truck driver at a Toronto distribution center. The man was locked in the sleeper cab by the gang members who were armed and masked.
Since the men knew that most if not all commercial truckers were protected and monitored with GPS tracking systems, they stopped to find the truck’s tracking device. After the unit was disabled, the men drove off.
The driver called the police a short time later when he was released. Unfortunately for the cargo theft gang members, the truck driver knew that GPS tracking systems were also placed in the shipment containers to monitor them while they are moved around the country. This shipment was of tobacco, so the tobacco company that owned the shipment was notified and permission was given to use the tracking device. This second GPS tracking system allowed the police to locate the thieves.
The cargo theft gang was stopped at a nearby loading dock. The missing truck and tobacco shipments were also found, as well as a warehouse full of other stolen goods. The estimated value of the recovered goods is around $2 million.
Although theft is on the rise, trucking companies as well as manufacturers are protecting their investments with GPS tracking systems. These systems certainly make things easy for the police, who only have to make the arrest after all of the tracking down and locating of the criminals is done for them with GPS technology.
