GPS tracking devices are capable of saving you thousands of dollars by tracking valuable possessions such as vehicles and laptops. But more importantly, they can save lives. Parents of mentally disabled children should consider investing in a GPS tracking device for their son or daughter to wear in order to ensure their safety whether the parents can be with them or not. Some mentally handicapped children are prone to wandering away from home and can easily become lost. Because of their innately trusting nature, these children are also prime targets for kidnappers and other child predators. In one case, a boy with Asperger’s syndrome was able to use his mother’s credit card to purchase a plane ticket and fly to another state to meet a friend. The GPS tracking device he was carrying gave police the information they needed to find him and return him home quickly. Whether a child has been kidnapped or has merely wandered away on his own, the mental turmoil for parents increases with each passing moment. GPS can help put those feelings of frustration and helplessness aside by making a quick and painless recovery possible.
Keeping Children Safe
Parents of mentally disabled children know that it takes a lot of time and effort to make sure they are cared for and protected at all times. A GPS tracking device can provide that extra set of eyes for parents so that should a child wander off, they can easily be located again. The device sends a signal from the transmitter to a receiving device or home computer. Parents can view location information in real time or as a report of activities throughout the day. Some models will also determine the speed and direction of travel so that police can have as much information to go on as possible during the recovery process.
A missing child creates fear in the heart of any parent, but perhaps even more so for parents of mentally handicapped children since they may not even realize they are in danger. If they do recognize the danger, they may not know how to get help. Police report that the likelihood of a quick recovery increases immensely when a lost child is carrying a GPS tracking device as compared with those who are not. While some may balk at the initial expense, understanding how GPS technology can provide safety and peace of mind for both parents and children should provide the incentive to make the investment.
