Making GPS Tracks

By Greg Bartlett

Have you ever wondered where your car has been? Maybe you don’t really have any particular reason you want to know other than curiosity. Or maybe you want to know where your teens have been driving your car, or where your spouse was on the weekend you were gone on a business trip. Of course you can ask your family, and probably they’ll tell you - but what if they leave something out, intentionally or unintentionally? It’s not like your car, a neutral participant, can tell you. Or can it?

Actually, your car may be able to do just that. A GPS vehicle tracking unit will enable you to track your car’s every movement. As you drive to work, the GPS unit will record the path you took, the speed you were driving, any stops you made, and the length of time at each stop. If you’re feeling curious sometime about where you’ve driven in the last month, all you have to do is take a quick glance at the computer and you can see the spider web of trails through your city.

If you need to check up on the location of a car that another family member is driving, a GPS vehicle tracking unit can do that, too. You’ll be able to see where the car has been and what the family member has been doing. Even better, many GPS units allow you to look anytime and find out exactly where the car is right now. Say you want to see if your husband could stop by and pick up the kids from daycare, you can take a quick look to find out if he’s still at work and thus unable to help or if he’s driving home and could take a quick detour to get the kids.

The GPS vehicle tracking unit can also be set to send you alerts, whether phone calls, emails, or text messages, whenever your vehicle exceeds a certain speed or is driven outside of particular areas or during particular times. For instance, if you have a teen, keeping track of the car’s speed can be helpful to ensure that your teen is not driving unsafely. And with time parameters set, if your teen drives during curfew, you will be alerted immediately.

Using a GPS vehicle tracking unit can help satisfy your curiosity about where your car has been, and can also be an important tool to keep track of your family’s driving activities.
