Pet Location: Lost?

If your pets are like my family’s pets, they aren’t content with staying in your yard. They like to wander no matter how much you try to keep them secured. Usually our pets are nearby, but sometimes we’ve missed one of our cats or dogs for a few days. Since we live out in the country, our pets aren’t likely to get run over by a car, but for most people, if a pet escapes and becomes lost, there’s a good chance they’ll never see the pet again.

So if your dog or cat goes wandering, what can you do to get it back alive? Sure, you can put up lost signs and notices in the newspaper, but is there anything more you can do? Actually, yes, there is. You can help prevent their escape – no matter how good they are at escaping – and then track them if they escape by using GPS locators.

GPS locator devices are small enough now that people can put them on the collars of their pets. Then, if the pet manages to escape the house or yard, the owner can track the location of the pet and retrieve it at once. Better yet, owners can set up predetermined boundaries for the pet, such as the house or yard, and if the pet crosses those boundaries, called geo-fences, the owner will be alerted at once and can stop the pet from going very far. Then the owner can find the real-time location of the pet, provided by the GPS device, and quickly head out to the pet’s location and capture his or her wandering furry friend.

Devices for GPS monitoring of pets often have lights attached to them as well, so that you can find your pet in the dark by using the light.

For instance, one family had two large dogs which loved to escape at any opportunity, and, like some pets, were escape artists, so the owner had GPS locators on their collars. One day while at work the owner received a phone call alert saying the pets had escaped the yard, and the owner was able to go out and retrieve the dogs before they’d gone more than a couple blocks.

If you’re worried about your pet escaping and becoming lost or stolen, a GPS locator is a way to protect your pet and ensure that you’ll know exactly where your furry friend is at all times, even when you’re not at home.
