Keeping Your New Electronics Safe

By Harriette Halepis

If you’ve just received a new television, stereo, DVD player, or any other type of electronic gift for Christmas, then you might want to consider installing a GPS tracker on that new toy. This is precisely why a recent news release (WALB, Albany, GA) entitled “It’s Prime Theft Time” is gaining a lot of attention.

GPS & Burglaries

Albany police told WALB that burglaries within the Albany area have increased drastically since November. To be precise, more than “248…” burglaries have been reported since the start of the November month. Nearly 90% of the items that were reported stolen were electronics.

Why are thieves targeting electronics? According to Albany Police Lieutenant James Williams, these items are “…going quick on the streets. its hot items on the streets, and people want to buy.” Even though this story may detail thefts within the Albany, GA, area, this doesn’t mean that your electronics are safe from harm.

In fact, electronic thefts are on the rise all across the United States. Many thieves know that most people receive electronic Christmas gifts, which leads to an increase in break-ins. What can be done about these recent thefts? While it’s not a good idea to try and attack a home intruder, it is a good idea to place a GPS tracker on any new electronic device.

When GPS trackers are added to electronics, police have a far better chance of tracking the stolen item. Having the ability to track an item will lead to the eventual capture of a thief. Further, if enough items are tracked, thieves will be far less likely to attempt to steal electronics in the first place - a sort of technological deterrent.

No matter where you live, or what kind of electronic gift you have received this year, think about keeping your new gift safe by using a GPS tracker. While police may not be able to find stolen goods that aren’t tracked, keeping, well, track of goods that have GPS devices is the best way to ensure that your items will be returned to you safely.
