Building confidence with your customer base is one of the quintessential elements in becoming a successful leader with both your peers and your clientèle. A customer focused approach to selling will transform the way in which you do business. The consumer will come back time and time again, not only for the product which your dealership offers to them, but for the superior level of service which you provide. There are four key elements involved in becoming ‘the trusted adviser’, all based on the greater premise of establishing your value. While most businesses may think that they offer an excellent product at the greatest value, few businesses are truly willing to that extra mile. By providing additional benefits to your customers for their business, you are showing them that you truly value your relationship with them.

Be The Expert – While it is obviously important that you know your product, you must be comfortable talking openly with your potential customers about making the best purchase for both their needs and their budget. Speak up. Offer suggestions. Your input is not only extremely educational for the consumer, but it shows them that you are truly invested in the choices which they make. To stand by passively is tantamount to allowing sales that might not have the best interests of the customer in mind. If you are hoping to be considered an expert in your field that stands apart from the rest, than you must engage with your customers. You might not be in agreement with everyone, but at least you will be respected; and respect is always more admirable than indifference.

Be Proactive – Do not wait for complications to arise. Look for ways to help your customers deal with vehicle maintenance and repairs. Work closely with a trusted mechanic, and offer to send customers to them in exchange for additional sales leads. Again, this approach involves going the extra mile for your customer by offering them yet another reason to maintain a loyalty to you and your dealership. Protect your leased and financed assets by installing a GPS tracking device on each vehicle.

Deliver Real Value – Every time your customer successfully starts their vehicle, it is an immediate representation of your overall ability to sell a vehicle worthy of purchase. Real value begins by offering substantial vehicles which in turn, your customer will be proud to own and drive. If you cannot purchase a vehicle for resale that you would not buy for yourself or your family, then it has absolutely no place on your lot.

Follow Up – Always ensure that when your customer drives their vehicle off the lot for the first time, that it is by no means the last time that you will see them. Send them a car wash coupon every couple of months. Work out discount oil changes at a quick lube business, and then send out a coupon to all your customers who have recently purchased a vehicle, advertising this special discounted rate. The least expensive, yet most dependable advertising tool you have at your disposal is word of mouth. Use it to your advantage.

Each of these steps involve a strong commitment to the customer, a high level of dedication to the product or service being provided, and an overall degree of organization and conscientiousness to follow through. Yet if implemented correctly, you will undoubtedly set yourself apart from the competition. By pursing excellence in everything you do, you will soon reap the benefits of a strong business and customer base, that will be there even in our current volatile economic climate.
