Global positioning systems are used in many industries today and have revolutionized daily life. GPS was established several years ago by the U.S. Department of Defense. Twenty-four satellites now circle the earth in precise orbits while transmitting signals to receivers below. Each satellite, traveling at a speed of 7,000 miles per hour, makes two complete circuits around the earth every 24 hours. These satellites are powered by solar energy, although they have rocket boosters that keep them in the correct orbits.

The Many Faces of GPS Tracking

GPS receivers can translate the signals they receive from satellites and use the information to determine the user’s position. Receivers on the earth must receive signals from at least 3 satellites in order to function correctly and predict the latitude and longitude of an object or person. While three satellite signals can also track movement, it takes at least four satellite signals to decipher altitude as well as the longitude and the latitude.

GPS devices are also able to calculate speed, bearing, trip distance, distance to destination, sunrise and sunset time. These amazing devices are extremely accurate, and are able to maintain their connection with space satellites even in crowded environments like cities or jungles.

However, the accuracy of GPS tracking devices may be affected by weather or other atmospheric factors. GPS devices are used by travelers to get to their destinations, by parents to keep track of their children, and by law enforcement officers to track criminals or stolen goods. And these are only a few of the many uses of GPS in the modern world. These tracking devices may be purchased as individual units or as navigation or security systems.

Many cell phones now include GPS functionality. This recent innovation can prove very helpful in difficult situations; in fact, it can even save lives. Some people rely on GPS navigation systems in their vehicles, but not everyone has vehicle tracking devices in their car. However, almost everyone carries a cell phone.

GPS devices can be a great help, especially when traveling in unfamiliar place. Whether one is lost while hiking a rugged mountain trail or simply trying to navigate through an unknown city at rush hour, GPS devices can provide the solution. Since cell phones have to be replaced every so often, buyers should consider getting a new phone with a GPS device. The benefits of having a navigation system nearby at all times are enormous.
