Today’s news about smartphones and apps reveals the latest advancements that can either add or take away from our busy lives.

Smartphone Technology

From Holiday Inn, the hotel giant is preparing to test an app that will allow those who stay with them to open their room doors with their smartphones instead of a standard plastic room key.  When you book your room online, you can download the app that will supply you with an email that unlocks the door.  Good or bad?  Good, but unless you travel a lot, a bit of overkill.  Here’s the link for more info.

WiFi hotspots in vehicles were a fore-gone conclusion and so it is that Audi is producing an A8 model with in-vehicle Internet access.  On this system, you can connect up to 8 devices even though the vehicle seats only five people.  It also has WPA2 encryption for security.  Good or bad?  Bad, because in-car infotainment systems have a stronger hold on the market and cost might be a factor. Go here for more information.

A dual-boot personal media player sports flexibility.  The Viliv P3 Prime personal media player can boot between the Android OS and Windows CE.  While this does device does not compete directly with smartphones, it does have some nice ‘smartphone’ like features.  It has a very nice, slick touch screen which helps in navigating apps.  Good or bad?  Good, because the dual-boot personality gives the user the best of choices between competing OS offerings.  You can see more here.

The new HTC Evo 4G is being released in June 2010 from Sprint.  The good thing about this smartphone is not necessarily its interface, but what it can do in speed, which can force other carriers to roll out their 4G offering as soon as possible.  The other nice thing about this device is that it can switch between 3G and 4G depending on what is available which really puts the ‘smart’ in this phone.  Versatility will reign as convenience plays an even bigger role in our lives.  Think of how you actually use your phone before you spend the money on a new one.  Look at a review here.

The best thing about smartphones right now is that there is a healthy level of competition in developing apps.  This in turn forces innovation and creativity that improves our quality of life in personal and business arenas.
