For women who suffer from domestic violence, life can seem like a hopeless series of painful experiences. Without protection from their abusive partners, these women typically suffer in silence, never receiving the help that they desperately need. Every year, 1.3 million women are physically assaulted by an intimate partner. Thousands are killed on an annual basis. In many of these cases, a tragedy could have been avoided if someone was looking out for the woman’s interests – if someone had made the effort to provide her with a GPS tracking system.
How GPS Can Help
Recently, a major cell phone provider established a program that refurbishes donated cell phones, arms them with GPS, and gives them to victims of domestic violence. The concept behind the program is to provide abused women with a means of receiving help when they need it. Even if the woman is unable to make a call to the police, if she can dial 911, they will be able to utilize the tracker within her phone to pinpoint her location and rush to her aid.
While GPS systems are often found in cell phones, they can also be simply worn on a woman’s body. With this kind of technology, if she goes missing or if there is reason to suspect that she is in danger, the authorities can locate her using the device. It is also possible for the court to mandate that a convicted abuser wear a similar tracker in order to prevent a repeat offense. Officials monitoring his location can thus make sure that he never has another opportunity to abuse his former partner.
Women who are victims of domestic violence need help. When an abusive partner goes on the rampage, they need someone to turn to. And whether it’s a concerned friend or the authorities, someone needs to be ready. When a woman carries a GPS tracker, her location can be monitored at all times. If there is ever a question about her safety, authorities can quickly locate her using the coordinates provided by the device. Fear of abuse can thus become a thing of the past.
GPS tracking can literally mean the difference between life and death for a victim of domestic violence. If you know someone who suffers from this kind of abuse, you can help. Let her know that there is technology that can give her the protection – and the peace of mind – that she needs.
