GPS Prevents Thanksgiving Theft

The National Equipment Register (NER) reports that machine theft during the month of November was greater in 2009 than theft during May and August of the same year. Based on statistics gathered during October, 2010, the NER also expects theft to rise in the weeks before American Thanksgiving this year. The NER warns police and business owners to effectively protect dealership vehicles, farm and construction equipment and contractor yards. GPS devices are one of the best ways to keep thieves from stealing any of this equipment.

In addition to installing GPS trackers on any vulnerable equipment, the NER also lists various ways to prevent machine theft. Here are some tips to take to heart this holiday season:

• Make sure that all alarms and security measures work properly.
• Look for any fence or gate holes where thieves might enter private property.
• Ensure that security cameras can pick up on small details (faces, license plates…)
• Hire a reputable company to patrol company lots during the holidays.
• Contact neighboring businesses in order to form a solid protection barrier.

The NER also points out that a recent string of false alarms affecting your business could be theft-related. Thieves often test alarms systems prior to break ins. If your alarm system proves to be easy to hack, thieves will know that your machinery is vulnerable. Do not take any recent false alarms lightly. Instead, make sure that your alarms are in top shape, and take extra protection measure if your alarm system has been ringing a lot lately.

As in most instances, preventative measures should also be taken to protect machinery from theft. Speak with police patrol officers in your neighborhood, and make sure that they are aware of the kind of equipment you have. Report any recent false alarms to police right away. In addition, be sure to inform police of the recent NER data mentioned above.

How GPS Can Help

While you are off enjoying your Thanksgiving break, thieves may be plotting to steal your machinery investments. Installing a GPS tracking device will allow you to enjoy peace of mind while also enjoying your holiday meal. With an RMT GPS tracker, you can make sure that:

• Rocky Mountain Tracking has your back with the help of RMT’s NavIQ software.
• Your machinery is protected at all times.
• Police can track any stolen vehicle within moments.
• You can keep an eye on your property around the clock.

Many thieves take advantage of the holiday season, since most people are away from machinery during this time. Don’t allow your investments to become part of the aforementioned NER statistic. Instead, protect your fleet with a GPS tracker, keep the above tips in mind, and make sure that your property is thoroughly protected.
