GPS use is on the rise, thanks to the proliferation of smartphones and embedded GPS chips in myriad different devices. The public’s consciousness is being raised to increasing degrees, thanks to these applications. One area in which GPS tracking is rapidly expanding is in the GPS outdoor market.
ABI Research conducted a study on GPS technology usage, and the study showed that the GPS market is continuing to grow at a remarkable rate; this, according to ABI research, is due in large part to the outdoor market, according to Garmin‘s (a major GPS device manufacturer) latest yearly financial results.
Garmin’s outdoor and fitness division made up 40% of their income during 2010. Sports and fitness enthusiasts are glomming on to GPS tracking devices. This means that over the next year or so, you should expect to see GPS watches, shoes with GPS tracking chips, and a host of other outdoor and fitness applications of GPS tracking devices.
One thing is clear: GPS certainly has a future in the future world — and probably a very bright one. GPS devices allow users to track their routes, their average speeds, and take an overall more methodological approach to their workout routines.
Have you found a use for GPS tracking devices in your fitness routine? If they became more widespread, cheaper, and easier to use, would you consider integrating GPS and other forms of technology into your routine? Let us know in the comments!
