Nearly all recently manufactured cell phones include a pre-wired GPS tracking device. As long as the phone is turned on, the internal GPS system can be used to pinpoint its precise location. This technology makes it possible to track down phones that go missing quickly and easily. In fact, there are Internet-based applications that allow users to track their cell phones through the web. If their cell phone is stolen, they can locate the perpetrator within minutes.
A student in Lancashire, England recently put his cell phone’s GPS to the test, after he found the phone missing from his desk. Working in his school’s computer lab, 20 year old James Bird quickly missed his phone and immediately used an Internet GPS application to locate it. The felon who had swiped the phone was clearly walking away from campus and approaching a bus station. With the assistance of a couple friends, Bird was able to track down the perpetrator and retrieve his phone. Police then arrested the thief, who was guilty of several other felonies.
For many people, losing a cell phone is no mere financial inconvenience. These days, your cell is your lifeline – a tool for communication with the world. It is used for everything from scheduling to surfing the web to texting your girlfriend when you are running late. Few people even bother to memorize phone numbers these days, since selecting a name from their contact list simplifies dialing. For users all over the world, the loss of a cell phone is thus a devastating experience.
GPS tracking has a wide variety of uses. In a dangerous situation it can save a life, but it is also invaluable when it comes to protecting valuable property – like cell phones. Conveniently, most phones already have this technology installed, which makes it not only easy, but also cost-effective, to keep an eye on your treasured little gadget.
