GPS tracking can be used for a multitude of tasks and is especially useful for investigative tracking by law enforcement to locate a person of interest or keep tabs on an offender and also to recover stolen property and vehicles. Spouses trying to prove infidelity can use GPS to their advantage. It is becoming an increasingly popular way for parents who want to track their teen drivers or know the whereabouts of their children. GPS has the advantage of being small and undetectable, relatively inexpensive and readily available. The systems are easy to use and even an amateur can track the object or person using computer software.
Law enforcement has benefited greatly from GPS tracking capabilities. Recently, in the middle of Jordan Sturm’s demo of “Find My iPhone”, a GPS-based app, a thief on a bike grabbed his iPhone and took off, probably quite pleased with himself.
However, the GPS tracking capabilities of the phone provided police with real time location updates and they were able to recover it. Police officers also use GPS to keep track of offenders under house arrest since they are able to pinpoint their location at any time. Pedophiles can be tracked to be sure they are not within a certain distance from a school, park or other location that can be set up using an electronic fence which sends an alert if someone violates it.
Advances in technology allow for extremely small personal trackers, such as the Ghost Rider, that can be hidden in a vehicle or in a backpack or suitcase in order to give a parent information they need to know their teen is safe and doing what they are supposed to be doing or perhaps to track a runaway teen.
It has also been used quite successfully to allow tracking of a spouse if there is suspicion of cheating; infidelity can put the wronged partner in real danger these days. Car dealerships protect their vehicles and qualify for lower insurance premiums with GPS tracking.
GPS tracking is a very cost-effective tool for anyone who needs to know the location of a person or an asset. The equipment is not expensive and the monitoring can be activated at the point that it is needed. It is a wise investment for a police department, car dealership, anxious parent or spouse – anyone needing accurate, real time information.
