You may remember a previous article about a domestic violence bill in Tennessee, which called for domestic violence offenders to wear a GPS tracking device at all times. This device would then alert a victim if a perpetrator enters any area near a victim. The concept behind the bill is to ensure that victims are safe from a retaliation attack.
The Berke Bill, sponsored by Sen. Andy Berke, was the brainchild of Kathy Albright, after her daughter lost her life to domestic violence. Albright’s daughter’s ex-boyfriend shot and killed her after many incidents of abuse and stalking. Albright wanted to do something to protect others from the same fate, which is why the Berke Bill was created.
The Bill passed unanimously in the Senate, but when the House of Representatives got its hands on it, they proposed testing the waters in only one Tennessee county before placing it on the Governor’s desk. In the end, however, the bill was signed as it stood.
Tennessee domestic violence offenders will now wear GPS tracking devices for the rest of their lives. Some feel that this law should be instated through the rest of the United States.
