HP and PING (Positive Information for the Next Generation) have teamed up in the fight against malaria, outfitting healthcare workers in Botswana with Palm Pre 2 smartphones to keep track of outbreaks.
A special app will house a database of photos, video, audio, and GPS coordinates used to help those within the healthcare profession gain a clearer picture of outbreaks, hopefully putting an end to the horrible disease. This will be the first time the disease is tracked in this manner, allowing officials to pinpoint areas that have outbreaks using the GPS data on the spot, and respond accordingly.
Where it used to take weeks to analyze data collected as an outbreak formed, it now takes mere hours. This could be a breakthrough in the fight against malaria, which (according to the World Health Organization) affects 10 percent of the population in Botswana.
