The Bayview Yacht Club has decided to install GPS tracking devices on all boats participating in the 87th Bell’s Beer Bayview Mackinac Race, giving fans a chance to see (in real-time) how their favorite boat is progressing. For a little added excitement, certain boats will be “adopted” by the major sports teams of Detroit.
Avid fans can follow along at home and see if the “Pistons” will beat out the “Red Wings.” This is sure to gain some additional fans who enjoy a good match!
Race officials have also decided to broadcast the start of the race, a regatta first. Commodore John Burke explains, “We typically draw sailors from 22 states and six nations [to view the start of the race] and for the world to be able to watch the starts and then track the boats – well, we think it is pretty spectacular.”
The Bayview Yacht Club is predicting as many as 5 million people will watch the race online. If you’re a regatta fan, make sure to check out the Bayview Yacht Club’s website for additional information.
