RunKeeper Includes New and Improved Features

RunKeeper, by FitnessKeeper, Inc., is already one of the most popular free running apps available for people wanting to track their running progress. The developers at RunKeeper recently released an update for the app that improves on existing features and adds a few new ones as well. The app uses the GPS tracking capabilities of the iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad, to track the route and pace of the runner in real-time. It is currently only compatible with Apple products, and requires iOS 3.0 or later to run.

This free app has always been popular with runners, allowing users to avoid paying for a dedicated GPS tracking watch, or some other device for running. As long as they already own an Apple device with GPS tracking enabled, users can track their progress for free, by simply downloading the application from the App Store. The app integrates maps, so users can see the exact route they travelled. It tracks distance, time, pace and calories burned during your run.

RunKeeper includes a personal dashboard, which is easy to access, and keeps a record of all of the user’s past runs. All the data is kept in one place, making it easy to monitor progress. The app also integrates iTunes, allowing runners to listen to their favorite tunes while exercising. Users can even change tracks within the RunKeeper application. RunKeeper also allows users to manually input exercise, such as runs on a treadmill.

The newest version of RunKeeper became available for download October 28, 2011, and is called Version 2.5.0.0. The new version is compatible with iOS 5, and improves on the accuracy of GPS tracking data. Another major feature runners can look forward to is automatic pausing. Before the update, and with most other running apps, if your run is interrupted by a red light or the need to catch your breath, the run time keeps ticking along. The GPS in the newest version of this app senses when you’ve stopped moving and pauses the clock, then resumes when you start moving again.
