If you are a pet owner, then you understand the fear of losing your pet. The number of animals that are lost each year due to wandering is staggering. Nearly half of the animals that arrive at animal shelters each year are strays or lost animals. When that lost pet is your close and long-time companion, it can be a traumatic experience. For years, pet owners have been seeking ways to keep track of their pets. Elaborate fencing systems, dog sitters, kennels, and of course the tried and true dog tag, are all means of trying to keep those furry friends close to home, or at least trackable if they do wander off. Pet tracking just got a whole lot easier with GPS tracking.

For many pet owners whose furry friends have a propensity for exploring, being able to see exactly where their beloved cat or dog is at all times has just been a wishful dream. Thankfully, it is no longer a dream. A number of GPS tracking devices have been devised specifically for pets and usually attach to collars. Pets can be monitored via handsets, cell phones, or computers, making it relatively easy for owners to monitor to their pets.

With names such as Loc8tor and Tagg the Pet, pet searching has reached a whole new level. Rather than wandering through neighborhood calling Fido’s name, owners can actually receive a text message with their pet’s location. The devices have various ranges and features, with one of the most common feature being an automatic text when the pet leaves a designated range. Pet owners set a perimeter of their choice that is connected to a home computer. If the pet goes outside the perimeter, the owners are immediately notified on their mobile device, where they can begin live tracking, knowing exactly where their furry friend is.
GPS tracking could help owners locate pets in natural disasters such as tornadoes, as long as the services supporting the technology are intact and the devices are charged. Pet loss in natural disasters is a real problem, and GPS tracking would provide a valuable service.

So, if your dog or cat is a regular escape artist, you might want to check out GPS tracking technology. And while you may have never dreamed of receiving a text from your dog, stranger things have been known to happen!

We all remember the sad images of dogs and cats sitting on rooftops or hanging out windows after Hurricane Katrina. Though heartbreaking, families often feel that they have no choice but to leave their pets behind when a disaster strikes; however, if the family has a plan, most pets can be saved. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) found that 35 percent of pet owners do not have a plan in place for their pets in case of an emergency, a simple but important precaution since most pets will not survive if abandoned.

Preparing your pet for an emergency is similar to preparing the rest of the family for disaster. Since most evacuation centers and shelters do not allow pets, arranging for someone outside the disaster zone to care for your pet if you cannot is top priority, such as a friend, family member, or even an animal shelter. Posting “Pet Inside” stickers on your windows will alert rescue workers, especially if you are not home when the disaster strikes. Preparing an emergency kit for your pet is also essential; your pet’s records, medications, food, and water should all be part of the kit. You may even want to consider using reflective collars, leashes, or vests for your pet in case the power goes out.

However, the most important thing you can do for your pet in a disaster situation is to have accurate identification. Collar tags, microchips, and GPS tracking devices are key to finding your pet when the crisis is over. There are many companies that offer GPS tracking for pets, but they all use basically the same technology. Most devices attach directly to a pet’s collar or harness, most are waterproof, and most notify pet owners when there is a problem.

Once you have set up your account with whatever company you choose, you will be asked to activate the GPS device and attach it to your pet’s collar. You will also set up a zone, or “geofence,” for your pet based on its daily activities. Then you will be notified through text, email, or phone whenever your pet leaves its zone; some systems even alert you when the battery needs to be recharged.

Though recent surveys show that more than 70 percent of pet owners would take their pets with them during a disaster, sometimes that is just not possible. Instead of depending on Saint Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of pets, be prepared and have a plan in place to ensure the safety of your pet and the happiness of your family.

This GPS tracking device consists of a tag for their collar and docking station, and is designed only for pets over 10 pounds. Simply place the tag on their collar, and begin receiving alerts via email or SMS whenever your pet wanders outside of its specified area. Press a button to temporarily disable the alerts if you happen to take your pet for walks.

The cost of the device includes a year of service, and if you have multiple animals to track, each additional tag includes the same year of service for $139.99.

The cost may be high to some, but for those who have pets, the cost of keeping them safe is priceless. Expect to see the Pet Tracker on the market next month.

Gone are the days when a lost dog meant a brokenhearted family or a lost kitty meant a little girl cried herself to sleep. Pets have benefited from being fitted with microchips for a number of years now, but with the advent of GPS tracking a family can immediately know the whereabouts of a beloved pet. Microchips require that someone find the animal and take it to a veterinarian or to animal control for the chip to be read, but there is no delay if your pet is equipped with GPS tracking.

Pets can be easily outfitted with a GPS tracking device and cellular transmitter that fastens to a special collar. The owner is able to easily program where the animal is allowed to go — whether that is a yard, farm or neighborhood — by building a virtual fence. When Fido ventures outside the predetermined boundaries, the owner is alerted and sent continual updates as to his location.

Last year Cinnabon, the pitbull puppy of former couple Sandra Bullock and Jesse James’, turned up missing. They utilized a variety of methods trying to track her down such as sending out notices in their immediate area and notifying the media. The dog was eventually found alive the following month, but appeared to have been beaten.

Imagine how quickly the situation could have been resolved had the dog been equipped with GPS tracking. Basically, it would have been a non-event because they would have been alerted immediately that she was outside of her fence. They could have acted on that information by following the location sent to their wireless device. Cinnabon not only would have been back home quickly, but would have been spared the trauma and psychological damage of a beating.

GPS tracking for pets is affordable for even modest households and will bring much peace of mind. Let’s face it, as well as being beloved family members, pets are an investment these days. Vet bills can run as high as human doctor visits and pets require all sorts of additional purchases to keep them well and happy.

By equipping them with GPS, you protect your investment and ensure that a favorite family member is protected. Most systems charge an activation fee and a reasonable monthly fee. Compared to other things that pets require, it may be one of the least expensive but most important things you do for them.

By Greg Bartlett

According to Dr. James Humphries of the Veterinary News Network, at least one in every three pets disappears and is lost every year. That adds up to about 5 million missing pets every year in the United States alone. These are heartbreaking statistics as many people consider their pets to be members of their families. In fact, most families would spare no expense or effort in order to bring their missing pets home.

GPS Tracking & Pets

There are two basis methods of pet recovery—microchips and GPS tracking. Microchips are small devices used for identification that are placed under the skin of an animal such as a cat, dog, or horse. Each microchip is about the size of a grain of rice, and they are effective in identifying animals. GPS tracking devices take the search for the missing animals much further. You see, microchips are useful only in identifying an animal and its owner.

These GPS tracking devices utilize CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) to help do more than simply identify animals. GPS tracking devices can actually locate the missing animals. This takes the guesswork out of missing animals; instead of a stranger finding and identifying an animal, with the GPS tracking device, you can locate your animal yourself using live, real-time tracking. You can track your missing animal on any web-enabled device such as a computer or a cell phone.

One of the best GPS tracking devices for pets is the PT-200. It is small and portable, and it can be used to recover any number of important things—from pets to cars. One of the most interesting features of the “pet version” of the PT-200 is that it comes in a canvas case that can easily slip on to a dog collar. Because the GPS tracking devices are easily transported on the dog’s collar, there is virtually no way to lose your dog or cat without being able to find them very soon after.

Pets are very important members of the family. Unfortunately, accidents happen, and pets sometimes wander off and get lost. No one wants to be without his beloved cat, dog, or horse for very long. The GPS tracking device PT-200 for pets provides real-time, up to the minute information as to the whereabouts of your pet’s location. Being able to track your pet brings peace of mind and confidence knowing it will be home soon.

By Greg Bartlett

For most people, pets are a part of the family. Sure, they’re furry, but they’re still family members. For some people, pets are their entire family. They might live alone as a young person, with just a dog or a cat for company, or perhaps an older person lives with a longtime family pet after the kids have grown up and left.

GPS Tracking & pets

No matter whether there are many people in the family or just one, a pet is still significant and its loss can be devastating. If the pet wanders off, no matter whether it is a purebred or a mix, the owners will be worried and scared that the pet might never come back. It might be bitterly cold and the pet could freeze to death, a pet could wander off too far and never come back, or a pet could even be stolen.

Protecting furry family members doesn’t have to just be a matter of keeping the pet inside all day. After all, some pets are escape artists, looking for any opportunity to slip out the door or over a fence. GPS tracking has now enabled pet owners to use GPS collars to track the whereabouts of their beloved pets and recover them quickly.

With a GPS tracking enabled collar, pet owners can now find their pets at all times. If a pet leaves a predetermined area, probably the house or yard, the owner receives a text message or phone call instantly, alerting him or her to the pet’s escape. The owner can then find the pet’s exact location and recover it before it gets further away from home. The GPS tracking unit will even notify the owner about the speed the pet is going, so if it looks like a dog is going, say, 55 miles per hour, it may be necessary to contact the police to help recover a stolen dog instead of just looking for a lost dog.

Whether a cat or a dog, whether young or old, pets can wander off and never come back. In the past, pet owners have often had to round up the entire family when a pet goes missing. Sometimes the whole neighborhood keeps an eye out for the missing pet, which hopefully is discovered soon. Thankfully, GPS collars make locating a pet much easier – and faster. With GPS tracking, pet owners can give themselves peace of mind by knowing that they can always locate their furry family members.

By Harriette Halepis

If you’re like most pet owners, you’d probably do almost anything to make sure that your pup is safe. But what happens when you are not around? Do the people you hire to take care of your pet really do what you ask them to? While most of us would love to assume that the people we trust with our pets are, well, trustworthy, this may not always be the case.

GPS Tracking & Pets

Thousands of people around the world hire dog walkers and dog nannies on a regular basis. While you can check references, up until this point it was impossible to ensure that your dog is safe when you leave it with another person. What’s changed? GPS tracking dog collars are now available, and they’re selling quickly for a good reason: security.

Dog owners across the world are finding out that some dog walkers and sitters can’t be trusted. With the help of a GPS tracking collar, you can determine whether or not your dog actually goes for a walk, or simply sits inside someone’s apartment for an hour. You can also figure out whether or not your dog sitter leaves your pooch sitting in a corner all day long.

Thanks to the innovative technology that is GPS tracking, you never have to leave your pup’s side. By simply placing a GPS collar around your dog’s neck, you will be able to track your pet’s every movement. In most instances, dog walkers and sitters are true professionals, but it never hurts to be certain that your dog is safe at all times. The best part about a GPS collar is that you don’t even have to tell a walker or sitter that your dog is wearing one.

While it may be illegal to track another person without written consent, it’s not illegal to attach a GPS tracker to your dog’s collar. If the collar is removed at any point throughout the day, then you can question a sitter or walker about the lack of inactivity. You can also instruct these people not to remove your dog’s collar under any circumstance. Since dogs aren’t likely to lose collars randomly, it would be fairly difficult for someone to explain to you the reasons why your dog lost its collar.

Some people may view the use of GPS dog collars in this manner as sneaky, but ensuring that your family pet is safe is far more important. Instead of purchasing a dog collar and a separate GPS tracking collar, simply keep the GPS collar on your dog at all times. This way, you can also find out if your dog escapes the backyard while you are away.

Many people use GPS dog collars to keep an eye on a dog’s whereabouts throughout the day, though your dog should also be tracked when you leave it with other people. Not only will you be able to ensure your dog’s safety with the help of a GPS tracker, but you’ll also gain peace of mind knowing that your dog is completely safe. GPS tracking collars are now available at a number of retailers, and most of these collars are compact and slim, so you don’t have to worry about any doggy discomfort.

By Greg Bartlett

Dog owners around the world understand the strong bond that can develop between humans and canines. To someone who doesn’t own a dog, that bond can be inexplicable, but a dog lover’s pet can become like a member of his family. Pet owners spend immeasurable time and money on their pets, and they grieve when their animal family members become sick and when they die. When a dog becomes lost, its owners spend many hours frantically searching and hoping that a kind person will find and report the lost animal.

GPS Tracking & Animals

But what if your dog doesn’t meet with good fortune? What if a crotchety neighbor decides to take pot shots at your animal and causes injury or death, as happened in one recent neighborhood? Pet owners whose pets are protected by GPS tracking can rest easy knowing that they could locate their beloved animal friend as soon as they realize he’s gone missing, minimizing the chance of tragedy.

Some GPS tracking devices have been designed specifically for pet owners and can be attached to a dog or cat’s collar. Certain models come with alert systems which allow you to set up a perimeter around your home. If your animal crosses the perimeter, you’ll receive an email or text message, allowing you to check on his location and retrieve him immediately.

GPS tracking devices can be invaluable for owners of expensive dogs as well. Dog thefts occur more often than many people realize, with small, expensive dogs such as Yorkshire terriers being the primary targets. Thieves can sell these dogs quickly for a hefty profit, and it’s not uncommon for a dog to disappear from the owner’s back yard in a matter of minutes. When your dog is protected by a GPS tracking device, however, you can immediately notify the police not only of the theft, but also of the dog’s whereabouts so that they can begin retrieval procedures.

As a dog owner, you’d do just about anything to keep your pet from harm. You provide food, shelter, health care, and love for your canine friend. You care about his safety and well-being, and you’re willing to do whatever it takes to ensure that he is cared for. Perhaps it’s time to take the next step and give your dog the gift of safety by equipping him with a GPS tracking device. The peace of mind you receive will be well worth the investment.

Nearly everyone will admit to knowing someone with an unusual pet. Maybe it’s the creepy guy with the snake collection, or that girl who positively adores her talking Hill Myna. Petting zoos too are very popular with kids this holiday season, and taking your kids will give them a chance to interact with a variety of unique species. Thankfully, these kinds of pets aren’t apt to wander far, but those with more mobile animals may want to consider a GPS tracking system. Easily one of the most in-demand items during this time of year, a GPS tracking device under the tree is sure to bring a smile to any pet owner.

Tracking Animals with GPS

One couple in Ohio is certainly putting theirs to good use. Steve Heathman and Dr. Melanie Butera have a household pet especially prone to wander. When a farmer brought an injured deer to Dr. Butera, a veterinarian, the couple simply couldn’t let the animal go. They named her Daffodil (Dillie for short) and nursed her back to health, deciding to keep the animal indoors with their two cats and one dog. Dille’s now housetrained and very much part of the family, so when she wandered out of an open gate this past summer, Heathman and Butera decided to purchase a collar outfitted with a GPS tracking device. Now her movements can be monitored with a computer, and the (slightly out of the ordinary) Ohio family has a little more peace of mind.

In a far less comfortable environment are New England’s moose herds, who nonetheless benefit from GPS tracking technology, as well. In case you’re wondering how well your pet’s GPS tracker will hold up, just follow the data provided by the Massachusetts Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit as they seek to protect moose that will contend with harsh conditions this winter. Researchers have outfitted many moose with GPS tracking devices which will let authorities see how animal populations are reacting to lengthening road networks and expanding neighborhoods. Ultimately, researchers hope to protect moose and humans from fatal road collisions or other accidents.

Yet the beauty of a GPS tracking system is its scalability. Whether you’re tracking one individual unit or hundreds, a fleet of fast-moving vehicles or a few slow-moving deer, an effectively implemented GPS tracking system can provide you with all information you need to keep what you love safe.
