GPS for Agriculture Business Goes to Market

July 7th, 2012

Quickly becoming a lost component of American industry, agriculture exists on the cutting edge of American science. It’s a complex industry, defined by soil analysis, nutrients added to soil, mapping, and sometimes difficult logistics. The American farmer is a project manager of the highest degree, and must become expert in a number of disciplines, managing each with a precision that puts just about every office middle manager in the world to shame.

Every great leader needs great tools, Hemisphere GPS is helping to provide great tools to farmers around the world in the shape of AgJunction, a GPS analytical software package that keeps all its data in the cloud.

What is the Cloud?

The cloud is the Internet.. Modern computing is moving away from proprietary hard disk devices. Hard disk drives are great, but come with one big problem: if that device is lost, damaged or stolen, the data contained therein is toast. Traditionally, physical backups have been the key to making sure data is safe. However, the web has evolved to a point where massive amounts of data can be stored comfortably “in the cloud.”

What does this mean for the average computer user, especially the farmer? As data becomes more fluid, it becomes more accessible. It is not unheard of to have hard disk drives accessible from a user’s desktop computer, laptop, tablet and even cellular phone. If all of those devices are damaged or destroyed, the data remains safe, accessible in a secure manner from another computer device.

The Farmer’s Needs

To the farmer, that means the data becomes, in many ways, more safe and secure. The farmer’s analytical data remains safe, while fleet management operations can take place anywhere, whether in the field or in the office.

Hemisphere GPS’s AgJunction software package aggregates all of that data, making it communicable across all devices functioning on the farm, piping that data in a manner that is actionable. In short, it takes a complex picture—what’s going on at the farm—and makes it easy to understand.

Top Notch Fleet Management

Few operations in the world remain so complex as agriculture. Thanks to AgJunction, that task is about to become a whole lot easier, making an already blazingly efficient task even more so.

AgJunction Mobile App Launched By Hemisphere GPS

June 5th, 2012

Canadian company Hemisphere GPS announced the launch of its new iOS app, AgJunction Mobile. This enhances its current agricultural data services platform AgJunction. The new app is available for iPhone and iPad, an in-field system to collect data using mapping of boundaries using GPS location data and soil sampling. Both AgJunction and Cogent3D, creator of PrecisionEarth, joined forces to bring AgJunction Mobile to the iOS platform. It is based on the PrecisionEarth platform, bringing a time saver to the table: direct sync with the AgJunction cloud system.

Users simply download the app from the App Store, enter their unique AgJunction license key, user name, and password. The app begins its automatic management of the data transfer between AgJunction Mobile and the AgJunction cloud, making manual data manipulation a thing of the past. The first release will give users the ability to sync data regarding growers, fields, farms, field boundaries, and directed sample locations all relying on GPS coordinates. New fields and farms are easily added, and users can use the app to map field boundaries and GPS locations of where soil samples are taken. Any data recorded in the field is automatically synched in the cloud and can be accessed in the field, in the office, or through an agricultural service provider.

AgJunction plans to continue this partnership with Cogent3D in the hopes of expanding the offerings of AgJunction Mobile in the future. They hope to be able to download recorded GPS location data, such as aerial imagery, crop yield, soil sampling, planting, etc., in the field to use as a guide for field sampling. They also hope to integrate the AgJunction electronic work order system and asset tracking system.

“The iOS and mapping expertise of Cogent3D has allowed us to quickly develop a convenient method for AgJunction customers to capture and synchronize their field data,” explains Jeff Dearborn, the general Manager of AgJunction at Hemisphere GPS. “The field data, when combined with the other AgJunction data management services, greatly improves the efficiency and accuracy in the analysis and application of precision agricultural techniques.”
