Every day we watch the news and listen to morbid stories of murder, violence, and death. After 30 minutes of this verbal battery, you have to ask yourself, why is America – a land built on freedom and harmony – the location of such destruction? And while civilians may ponder this cosmic question, the sad truth is that the world is certainly not the place it used to be. However, every now and again, we hear a story that gives us hope – one that helps us remember that all is not lost…

On July 5, 2010 Idaho citizens finally heard some good news, when reports came out that Thomas Trevino, an accused killer, was tracked down by police somewhere in Colorado. How was he found so far away from his Twin Falls home, you may ask? Bloodhounds tracking his scent? Dapper Dan hair gel? (George Clooney’s downfall in “O Brother Where art Thou?) Nope – technology is way beyond old school tactics. The answer: the GPS tracking devices in his cell phone.

It is unlikely that Trevino knew about the GPS tracking capabilities within his phone, or he may have been more careful about turning it on. Thankfully, however, police were able to capitalize on the criminal’s ignorance and utilize GPS tracking devices to track down the general location of the accused killer. A resident of Colorado also assisted by giving more specifics on the Trevino’s location, but the cell phone coordinates brought officials extremely close to their target.

The benefits of GPS tracking devices are constantly becoming more significant and more popular. Today, GPS is used for everything from crime investigation to extreme sports, the common denominator being the convenience of universal tracking from global satellite systems. GPS trackers are now installed in most new cell phones. They can also be worn in the form of wrist or ankle bands. These are frequently used by athletes in events or worn by criminals for tracking purposes.

GPS tracking devices often find their ways into vehicles, as well, either for tracking cargo or simply for the purpose of keeping track of a valuable car. And the possibilities go on and on. The opportunities for using GPS tracking just keep on growing, and America is beginning to stand up and take notice.

Hope is a rare commodity in our world today. I think everyone would agree that we all could use a little more of it. GPS tracking gives us hope that we can protect the people that we love, and keep our communities safe and secure.

If you’ve ever had a car stolen you know the stress, hassle, and heartbreak that it can cause. Not only does car theft put your family out of a vehicle, but it means tons of paperwork, phone calls from police, and days of waiting and wondering about the next step. In short: car theft wreaks havoc. The good news is that US car theft rates are on the mend, largely due to the improvement of GPS tracking technology to include anti theft devices.

Over the past 6 years, the rate of car theft in the US has steadily declined. In fact, the first 6 months of 2009 evidenced an astounding 18.7% decrease from 2008. Apparently, car thieves are getting the picture that the risk is not worth the potential gain. The question is, why?

Let’s face it. If you’re going to steal something, you want to do it in such a way that you won’t get caught. When it comes to stealing cars, criminals have to ask themselves: what are the chances that the police will catch me in the act? While ten years ago it may have been unlikely that a stolen car would be recovered, things are different today. These days, may people have anti theft devices installed in their vehicles.

If a car has an anti theft device equipped with GPS technology, the thief who steals it will likely not get far. The tracking system makes it easy for police to detect the location of the vehicle, thus enabling them to quickly recover it and arrest the culprit. The system works by utilizing satellites to pinpoint the coordinates of the installed tracker. Within minutes of connecting with the GPS system, anti theft devices thus provide the needed information for simple detection.

While some thieves are getting smarter about GPS technology, the truth remains that the rates of car theft are steadily declining. And along with this decline, the popularity of anti theft devices installed in vehicles is rapidly growing. Obviously, Americans are realizing that prevention is the key to protecting their property. And while this may seem like an extreme measure, it is making a huge difference in the amount of car thefts that occur each year. One tiny gps device can protect your expensive car. Anti theft devices make it possible for you to protect your property and give you the peace of mind that accompanies confidence in your vehicle security.

The thieves had stolen 68 vehicles and replaced the VINs and titles with phony ones to be able to license and sell them to unsuspecting customers. The vehicles were hidden in storage units and apartment and garages as well as with their new, unsuspecting owners who had purchased them from the suspects.

Who thinks about checking a VIN on a vehicle that you are going to purchase? No one really. So you purchase a car that is rightfully someone else’s and now you make payments on what? A complicated sort of affairs involving lawyers ensues. This scenario could have been mitigated with the installation of GPS Tracking devices.

Consider that if consumers and dealers alike caught on to how effective GPS Tracking is for vehicles, then there would be more of them and they would help owners recover from theft much sooner.

GPS Tracking Fights Car Thieves

Here are the important ways that GPS Tracking deters car thieves:

Location Monitoring

Ever wonder where your car is located? Maybe not yet, but you might eventually. This is true if you have a teenage driver in your house. Or, a spouse that you suspect is not being faithful. You can use a GPS Tracking device to verify not only location, but truthfulness about the locations of the drivers. How you use this information is up to you, but it can help bring closure to many domestic situations.

Directional Monitoring

Which direction is your vehicle going? Who is driving? How can you know for sure that it hasn’t been stolen? Looking at the direction of travel on your PC screen is the place to start for answers. After that, it is just a matter of verifying the information by a conversation with the driver(s). Some models of GPS Tracking units have a geo-fencing option which allows you to obtain a text message or email if a vehicle breaks a boundary that you have set.

Speed Monitoring

No one goes the speed limit, right? True, but you need to know if someone is driving your car at excessive speeds. The reason is not only because they can get a ticket or even worse, and accident, but also the wear and tear on your vehicle is unnecessary.

Other Benefits

There are other benefits of outfitting your own vehicle with a GPS Tracking device. Check with your insurance agent about a discount in your insurance premiums. This is an often overlooked money saver. In fact, the savings will eventually pay for the device (depending on which one you purchase).

With all the anti-theft solutions out there, GPS Tracking delivers more value than you expect. Always check your vin numbers on used cars and personally go to the DMV to ensure you are not getting a “fast one” pulled on you and your wallet. It took over one year to solve the case in Indiana due to the sharp eye of an employee in the DMV in that state. One year is a long time to sort out the theft of 68 cars. That is quite a lot of police man hours and investigative detectives skills to sort it out. Don’t let a situation like that enter your family. Buy a GPS tracking device today!

By Greg Bartlett

After months of saving and planning, you’ve purchased a new car. Now you find yourself with the fear shared by most new vehicle owners, the fear of theft. Various websites offer advice on keeping your vehicle safe from thieves. However, what if these tips fail? What if your new car does get stolen? How do you or the police find it again?

GPS Tracking & Auto Theft

Vehicle tracking devices, since their invention, have had many purposes. Companies have used them to keep items safe and keep track of employees. Individuals, too, have made use of these devices. The devices help them track their family members– including their possibly unfaithful spouses or their own children and provide many other uses. Among these many uses is vehicle tracking. Vehicle tracking allows, among other uses, car owners to track down a stolen car.

Of course, most people think their car will never be stolen and they’ll never need vehicle tracking devices. Auto owners repeatedly leave their windows down, an invitation to car thieves, and sometimes even forget their keys in their cars. In addition, cars are even, at times, left running. Of course, the best way to prevent theft is to take precautions–roll up windows, turn off cars, and take keys out. However, what if you take all these precautions and your car is still stolen?

Some cities, including Houston, found that auto thefts rose in 2009. Although one can only imagine that many of these thefts were due to a lack of foresight from vehicle owners, some of these cars were probably stolen from owners who had taken all the right safeguards. Still, these car owners likely forgot one last safeguard–their GPS vehicle tracking devices. These devices allow owners and police officers to discover where the car is located – routes traveled, speeds and stops are recorded and easily mapped. In addition, the devices are easy to hide, so car thieves unaware of their existence. Imagine their surprise when you arrive at the scene and reclaim your car and possessions!

Some car owners may feel GPS vehicle tracking is too expensive or complicated to implement in their lives. However, with prices of such devices currently dropping and technology becoming less complicated, these car owners should rethink. Besides, better to take a little extra effort and money now to safeguard one of your most necessary possessions than to lose it forever. And think about what you might lose that is in your car as well. A laptop full of company data might cause undue stress at the office. Tracking your vehicle is a wise anti-theft move for many reasons.

The International Association of Marine Investigators estimates that approximately 27,000 boats are stolen every year. And if you are the owner of a boat, you certainly do not want to be a part of this number.

There is a boat owner in Florida who now knows firsthand that a GPS tracking device is an excellent investment. This boat owner is starting off the new year still in possession of his boat, thanks to GPS technology and quick action his part and on the part of the local police force. He installed a GPS tracking device on his boat back in October and this past week was alerted through a text message sent to his cell phone that someone had moved his boat.

The GPS tracking device that the man in this story chose was one that allowed him to set a certain range of movement for his boat. Once his boat moved out of the accepted range, the device was set to send him a text message to make him aware that his property was out of range.

Once he received this message about the unauthorized use of his boat courtesy of his GPS tracking device, the boat owner was able to inform the police. Included in the text message was information about the direction in which his boat was headed, so the police knew where to look for the stolen boat.

The police department was able to locate the boat using a helicopter. The boat, valued at around $200,000, was found to be in good condition. The boat thieves escaped and at press time, they were still on the run. However, the owner of the boat was likely quite relieved to have his property returned to him, even if the thieves were not apprehended right away.

A GPS tracking device like the SmartTrack that Rocky Mountain Tracking sells is equipped with a Geo-fence and you can have up to 2 geo-fences programmed at a time. Once your boat, vehicle or other asset is moved in or out of an area that you determine, the geo-fence goes into alert mode. When you have the geo-fence on, you can choose to receive an e-mail or SMS message to let you if the asset you are tracking crosses the boundaries you have set.

Add a GPS tracking device to your anti-theft arsenal today.
