National Crime Information: 2010′s Most Stolen Vehicles

The National Crime Information Center (NCIC) recently released 2010′s most stolen vehicle list. For the first time in 8 years, domestic cars are more favorable to thieves than foreign varieties. At the top of the list is 1994 Honda Accord, followed by 1995 Honda Civic, 1991 Toyota Camery, 1999 Chevrolet Pickup, 1997 Ford F150 Series, 2004 Dodge Ram, 2000 Dodge Caravan, 1994 Acura Integra, 2002 Ford Explorer, with the 1999 Ford Taurus at the tail end.

There are many different reasons that car theft occurs. Thieves will typically choose a car that has valuable parts, and is relatively easy to steal. Technology, such as GPS tracking, has resulted in a decrease in occurrences of car theft. 2010′s car theft numbers are predicted to be the fewest since 1967.

The National Insurance Crime Bureau have released some guidelines for a layered approach to car theft prevention. Following these steps can significantly reduce your risk of vehicle theft.

1. Don’t Make It Easy: This suggestion is common sense, almost to the point of insult. However, a staggering amount of car theft can easily be prevented with a little precaution on the part of the owner. Roll up your windows and lock all car doors when leaving your vehicle. Make sure you take your keys with you.

2. Put Up Red Flags: Equipping your car with an alarm is a huge red flag for potential thieves, that tells them you’re not an easy target. Something as simple as a little flashing light on your dashboard is often enough warning. Should the thief miss the flashing light, a loud alarm with flashing headlights will likely draw enough unwanted attention to run the criminal off.

3. Immobilize Your Vehicle: Most cars can be customized with immobilization devices, aimed to keep anyone but the owner from starting the car. Some of these devices include smart keys, fuel cut-offs and kill switches. If the car wont start, it can’t be stolen.

4. Use Tracking Technology: GPS tracking technology may be the most effective method of preventing and recovering stolen vehicles. If a thief sees that your vehicle is equipped with GPS tracking, he or she is not very likely to steal it. The main reason being that even if the car is successfully stolen, the police can easily track the property, and possibly arrest the thief red-handed with your stolen vehicle.

Immobilzers No Match for Malaysian Car Smugglers

Despite being equipped with GPS trackers and immobilizers, 12.6 million dollars worth of vehicles (51 to be exact) were smuggled from Malaysia into Thailand. The five suspects who were arrested for the crimes used technology to disable the GPS devices before stealing them.

Now, Selangor police are faced with the tough task of finding the stolen cars to return them to their rightful owners. It appears Mercedes and BMW cars were car jacked, while the Toyota vehicles were stolen with no occupants (the cars were just sitting in their respective parking spaces or driveways).

How is it even possible to get a stolen car over the border?

This is blamed on loose regulations, with easily forged documents accepted to gain entry to Thailand, making it easy for thieves to escape with no questions asked. Officials are asking for new regulations to be put in place, which would require a bit more personal information to be checked in their system to be sure the person crossing is who he says he is. More importantly, it will identify discrepancies between the person crossing and the car owner.

Officials believe there are a few more perpetrators out there, but are confident they will be found. Until then, Malaysian residents must be on guard.

GPS tracking devices continue to contribute to the nation’s decreasing auto theft rate, according to a study by a leading research group. A national organization that helps instruct about crime released its annual auto theft report last week, which includes data on the most commonly stolen types of vehicles in the United States.

The top reported target for 2008 was the 1994 Honda Accord. The newest model vehicle to make the top ten list was the 2004 Dodge Ram Pickup, coming in at number five. Researchers say the vehicles stolen most often represented a perfect storm of vulnerability and scrap value. The vehicles included in the report featured outdated security systems and expensive parts. Car thieves find it easy to profile those particularly attractive vehicles.

However, thanks to improving technology and the efforts of law enforcement, car thefts in 2008 were reduced to less than a million, possibly the lowest number in twenty years. If preliminary numbers are to be believed, this represents a decrease of 13.1% from the previous year. These figures coincide with a decrease in the overall crime rate, but caution and technology have certainly played an important role.

There are four recommended layers of prevention to avoid the loss or theft of your vehicle. One of these is of course the installation of a GPS tracking device. The benefits of knowing the location of your vehicle at all times are obvious. The location data may be transmitted silently and relayed to your computer, letting you monitor the position of your vehicle in real-time. Your mom thinks you’re at a friend’s house, studying, but you’re not. She doesn’t know that pretty much every day after school, you head downtown and scout out the cars, looking for things to steal from them. You have a friend who steals the cars themselves, and someday you intend to work up to that, but for now you’re just sticking with taking electronics and other valuables from the vehicles.

You finally pick a vehicle that looks like a good target. You can clearly see a laptop and a cell phone left in the car by careless owners. You’ve gotten good at breaking in, so it takes you about thirty seconds to unlock the car. Then you start searching the car quickly, trying to make sure you’ve gotten everything of value.

And yes, that is a police officer right behind you, telling you you’re under arrest. You try to tell him it’s your friend’s car, but he doesn’t believe you. He has a good reason not to – the car is owned by the police, and it’s a bait car just waiting for people like you.

A bait car is usually put in areas where the community has had problems with car break-ins and auto thefts. Valuables such as the ones you were targeting are placed inside, and the car itself is equipped with GPS vehicle tracking. If the car is broken into, it alerts police at once.

If you’d decided to steal the car, like your friend would have done, the GPS vehicle tracking unit would have alerted police when the car was moved, and would have continued to send information to police as you drove. It’s been a hectic day at work, and you had to stop by the grocery store on the way home. You quickly gather your bags after checkout and head out to where you parked. Your car isn’t there, so you figure you must have the wrong row. But the more you look, the more you realize that your transportation is gone. Somehow, your car disappeared, and you don’t think it rolled off on its own. Now you have to go through the process of filing a police report and hoping you can get your stolen vehicle back. Unfortunately, the chances are pretty slim.

Actually, your chances are higher than average since you recently installed a GPS vehicle tracking device in your car. You’d intended to use it just to find out where you vehicle went, how long each trip was, where it stopped, and how fast it was going. That way you could make sure your teenager, the only other person who drives your car, is being safe when you’re not in the car with him.
