If you are a pet owner, then you understand the fear of losing your pet. The number of animals that are lost each year due to wandering is staggering. Nearly half of the animals that arrive at animal shelters each year are strays or lost animals. When that lost pet is your close and long-time companion, it can be a traumatic experience. For years, pet owners have been seeking ways to keep track of their pets. Elaborate fencing systems, dog sitters, kennels, and of course the tried and true dog tag, are all means of trying to keep those furry friends close to home, or at least trackable if they do wander off. Pet tracking just got a whole lot easier with GPS tracking.

For many pet owners whose furry friends have a propensity for exploring, being able to see exactly where their beloved cat or dog is at all times has just been a wishful dream. Thankfully, it is no longer a dream. A number of GPS tracking devices have been devised specifically for pets and usually attach to collars. Pets can be monitored via handsets, cell phones, or computers, making it relatively easy for owners to monitor to their pets.

With names such as Loc8tor and Tagg the Pet, pet searching has reached a whole new level. Rather than wandering through neighborhood calling Fido’s name, owners can actually receive a text message with their pet’s location. The devices have various ranges and features, with one of the most common feature being an automatic text when the pet leaves a designated range. Pet owners set a perimeter of their choice that is connected to a home computer. If the pet goes outside the perimeter, the owners are immediately notified on their mobile device, where they can begin live tracking, knowing exactly where their furry friend is.
GPS tracking could help owners locate pets in natural disasters such as tornadoes, as long as the services supporting the technology are intact and the devices are charged. Pet loss in natural disasters is a real problem, and GPS tracking would provide a valuable service.

So, if your dog or cat is a regular escape artist, you might want to check out GPS tracking technology. And while you may have never dreamed of receiving a text from your dog, stranger things have been known to happen!

He may be a stellar escape artist, but Houdini (no, not the magician, but rather a dog) is finding it more difficult to disappear thanks to the Loc8tor GPS tracking device.

Houdini was placed in a foster home by Utah’s Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, and as he was known for his escape act, was fitted with a Loc8tor device. Although every effort was made to keep him inside, he still found a way to break free by shoving an air conditioner out a window.

Using the Loc8tor, the sanctuary’s adoption manager Kristi Littrell was able to pinpoint the location of the lab-shepherd mix to a vacant lot nearby. She said that if it weren’t for the device, she might never have found him. The lot was so overgrown with weeds the same color as Houdini’s coat, she likely would have passed right by without even seeing him there.

“It’s great these devices are available to help us now,” she said. “They will undoubtedly help in a lot of cases where pets would otherwise not be found and returned home.”

The adoption agency is hoping someone wants to give Houdini a good home, and plans to send him on his way with the GPS device, assuring his safety for years to come. It is their hope the device will keep him out of harm’s way, and out of the shelter for good.

Roughly half of the animals that end up in a shelter are either stray or lost, so the increased use of GPS devices just like the Loc8tor could be great news for the nation’s overcrowded animal shelters. The Loc8tor device attaches to the pet’s collar in the way a name tag would, and transmits a signal picked up by a handset the owner carries to track down the missing animal. Once you are within the 400 foot range of the tag, the transmitter is able to pick up the signal. The Loc8tor, one of many devices targeting pets on the market, goes for $100.

We all remember the sad images of dogs and cats sitting on rooftops or hanging out windows after Hurricane Katrina. Though heartbreaking, families often feel that they have no choice but to leave their pets behind when a disaster strikes; however, if the family has a plan, most pets can be saved. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) found that 35 percent of pet owners do not have a plan in place for their pets in case of an emergency, a simple but important precaution since most pets will not survive if abandoned.

Preparing your pet for an emergency is similar to preparing the rest of the family for disaster. Since most evacuation centers and shelters do not allow pets, arranging for someone outside the disaster zone to care for your pet if you cannot is top priority, such as a friend, family member, or even an animal shelter. Posting “Pet Inside” stickers on your windows will alert rescue workers, especially if you are not home when the disaster strikes. Preparing an emergency kit for your pet is also essential; your pet’s records, medications, food, and water should all be part of the kit. You may even want to consider using reflective collars, leashes, or vests for your pet in case the power goes out.

However, the most important thing you can do for your pet in a disaster situation is to have accurate identification. Collar tags, microchips, and GPS tracking devices are key to finding your pet when the crisis is over. There are many companies that offer GPS tracking for pets, but they all use basically the same technology. Most devices attach directly to a pet’s collar or harness, most are waterproof, and most notify pet owners when there is a problem.

Once you have set up your account with whatever company you choose, you will be asked to activate the GPS device and attach it to your pet’s collar. You will also set up a zone, or “geofence,” for your pet based on its daily activities. Then you will be notified through text, email, or phone whenever your pet leaves its zone; some systems even alert you when the battery needs to be recharged.

Though recent surveys show that more than 70 percent of pet owners would take their pets with them during a disaster, sometimes that is just not possible. Instead of depending on Saint Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of pets, be prepared and have a plan in place to ensure the safety of your pet and the happiness of your family.

For many American families, a dog is not merely a pet – he is a member of the family. And like any other relative, the dog’s whereabouts are important to the daily functioning of the family. If he goes missing, the family searches him out with the same vigor that they would a missing child. Thankfully, GPS Tracking can now make this process significantly simpler and much less heartbreaking.

The Missing Dog Scenario

Typically, when a dog goes missing, his family spends countless hours wandering around the neighborhood looking for him. They call his name. They ask the neighbors if little Fido was recently spotted. If these first attempts are not successful, they then put up signs and place advertisements letting the public know that the family is offering a reward. For days, family members’ lives are thrown into upheaval until the missing canine is found.

And what if all of the effort does not result in the lost dog’s return? The devastated family is left to only wonder what may have happened to their beloved pet. Of course, sooner or later a new dog may be adopted, but the pain of losing the first will never completely fade.

GPS to the Rescue

All of the frustration and heartache of a lost dog can be eliminated using appropriate GPS technology. How, do you ask? If a pet is wearing a GPS tracker, his whereabouts can be monitored at all times. In the event that he wanders off, his owner can quickly uncover the coordinates of his location so that the canine can be found and returned home.

While purchasing this technological novelty for a pet may seem a little extreme, the resulting convenience is invaluable. The process of finding a missing dog is simple and painless for everyone when GPS is involved. And since the trackers are compact, they can be worn on a regular dog collar for the sake of comfort and ease of use. The convenience far outweighs the cost in this situation.

No more worrying about accidentally leaving a door open. No more locking your pet up so that he can’t escape. GPS tracking protects dogs from danger while providing your family with peace of mind that their fuzzy family member will never be permanently lost. This fantastic innovation offers freedom from worry and freedom from the cage. Get yours today and see how easy it can be to protect your pet!

Nearly everyone will admit to knowing someone with an unusual pet. Maybe it’s the creepy guy with the snake collection, or that girl who positively adores her talking Hill Myna. Petting zoos too are very popular with kids this holiday season, and taking your kids will give them a chance to interact with a variety of unique species. Thankfully, these kinds of pets aren’t apt to wander far, but those with more mobile animals may want to consider a GPS tracking system. Easily one of the most in-demand items during this time of year, a GPS tracking device under the tree is sure to bring a smile to any pet owner.

Tracking Animals with GPS

One couple in Ohio is certainly putting theirs to good use. Steve Heathman and Dr. Melanie Butera have a household pet especially prone to wander. When a farmer brought an injured deer to Dr. Butera, a veterinarian, the couple simply couldn’t let the animal go. They named her Daffodil (Dillie for short) and nursed her back to health, deciding to keep the animal indoors with their two cats and one dog. Dille’s now housetrained and very much part of the family, so when she wandered out of an open gate this past summer, Heathman and Butera decided to purchase a collar outfitted with a GPS tracking device. Now her movements can be monitored with a computer, and the (slightly out of the ordinary) Ohio family has a little more peace of mind.

In a far less comfortable environment are New England’s moose herds, who nonetheless benefit from GPS tracking technology, as well. In case you’re wondering how well your pet’s GPS tracker will hold up, just follow the data provided by the Massachusetts Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit as they seek to protect moose that will contend with harsh conditions this winter. Researchers have outfitted many moose with GPS tracking devices which will let authorities see how animal populations are reacting to lengthening road networks and expanding neighborhoods. Ultimately, researchers hope to protect moose and humans from fatal road collisions or other accidents.

Yet the beauty of a GPS tracking system is its scalability. Whether you’re tracking one individual unit or hundreds, a fleet of fast-moving vehicles or a few slow-moving deer, an effectively implemented GPS tracking system can provide you with all information you need to keep what you love safe.

If you’re going to be in Las Vegas, Nevada, this September 15-17th, then you might want to head over to the SuperZoo. Positioning Animals Worldwide Inc. plans to reveal its SpotLight GPS Pet Locator to a crowd of onlookers.

The SpotLight GPS Pet Locator is a device that will be directly linked, 24 hours per day, to the American Kennel Club Companion Animal Recovery System. This is the only GPS tracking system in the world that will have around-the-clock monitoring attached to it.

Anyone wishing to see a demonstration of this GPS tracking system is invited to attend the unveiling at SuperZoo. Those that do attend will gain a discount on a SpotLight GPS Pet Locator. In addition to the existing features of the SpotLight Pet Locator (including a rescue button and a beacon light), the new device will also include a new battery management system, and mobile phone applications.

This new innovation by Positioning Animals Worldwide Inc. will help pet owners to track their animals in real time. This system will become especially useful when pets wander away from home. With the help of constant monitoring from the American Kennel Club, a pet owner will be able to find an animal that has wandered. The American Kennel Club will contact a pet’s owner when a pet begins to wander outside of set parameters.

By Greg Bartlett

A couple weeks ago, I was down at the Humane Society and saw a number of dogs and cats which were hoping to find their home. Maybe they want the home they’d come from, or maybe they want a new home because they’ve never had one in the first place.

Pet Tracking Collar

Sometimes pets wander off and get lost and are turned in to the Humane Society or Animal Control. When that happens, the pet could be adopted by someone else, or could even be put to sleep if no one claims it.

Naturally you don’t want that to happen to your pet. After all, it’s a member of your family, not someone else’s family, and you certainly don’t want your pet to have to be put down.

While you’re busy this summer, put a GPS tracking device on your pet to ensure that your pet, if it does escape, won’t be picked up by the Humane Society or Animal Control.

If your pet manages to escape from your yard, perhaps digging under the fence, figuring out how to work the handle, climbing a tree, or scrambling over the fence, the GPS tracking device will alert you immediately by phone call, email, or text message. You can then monitor your pet’s location and retrieve your pet before someone else does.

A GPS device can also be fun and informational, as well as practical. Some of my family’s cats wander around routinely, usually returning at night to be fed.

We can use a GPS tracking device to follow the cat’s movement and find out where it’s been and what it’s been doing. When one of our dogs started visiting a neighbor’s house to be fed regularly, a GPS collar would have told us exactly what was happening. Perhaps you’re just curious about where your pet has been, or maybe you need to know what your pet is doing while you’re not at home, whether because it’s eating too much and having health issues or because it’s returning home injured.

Knowing the whereabouts of your pet is important for your peace of mind and your pet’s safety. Your pet is like a family member to you, and it should stay in your family, not get sent to the Humane Society or Animal Control and get adopted by someone else or even put to sleep. Use a GPS tracking device so you can make sure you know what your pet’s doing this summer.

by James Neely - freelance writer for hire

If your dog ventures out a lot unsupervised, then you know how easy it is for them to wander away and not to return until later. Sometimes they do not come home ever again. These realities are what are forcing some dog owners to look at various solutions for answers.

True, a good dog collar with a tag that includes all of the pets’ information is a good start. But what if the dog is not in an area where there are houses and people? What happens if the tag comes off of the collar? What if the pet is stolen?
You can get the answer to your question of where your dog is with a GPS pet tracking device. Here are the benefits of using one of these devices:

Sends alerts with geo-fencing. Should your pet stray beyond where they should be, you would get an alert via the geo-fencing option. Then you can look at the data to see which direction they are headed.

Allows you to see where they have been. Once the dog has returned, you can get data on where they have been. Dogs can develop habits of going to the same places. This is especially true if there is food involved. Or perhaps a companion dog is a draw for your pet.

Location if they are lost. Should your dog become lost, you can know the location of him/her within a few meters of their actual location. This allows you to go to the area and begin a search in a relatively confined area. Your chances of finding your dog are high.

Pet owners understand the importance of maintaining control of where your dog is at all times. You can make this job easier with a GPS pet tracking device. The RMT PT-200 GPS product makes this a breeze. It is the smallest device available and comes with collar options for your dog.

These devices are very valuable for dog owners who live in rural areas and live on large tracts of land such as farms. In fact, if you have other animals that are important to keep track on their movements (horses, maybe?), then you should consider adding a GPS pet tracking device to them as well.

Knowledge is power and it keeps you in control of your pets and their location. You will have to look far to find a better solution. And, the cost is affordable as well. Consider one of these for your pet today.

Thumbing through a magazine the other day, I saw an interview with a pet therapist. Some of you reading this may think that this is a very necessary profession and some of you may not. Either way, you surely have noticed that people are putting a lot more efforts to take care of their pets these days. Animals are not just left in the backyard, chained to a fence anymore.

If yours is a family that allows your pet to roam the neighborhood a bit or if you take your pet with you on hikes and family vacations, then you have to have some concern over your pet’s potential to get lost. Sometimes just yelling a pet’s name is enough for them to come running. This may work as long as your pet has not wandered too far out of eyesight and earshot. But what do you do when a pet simply cannot be found?

When an animal goes missing, it can be very difficult to find. Animals are often disoriented and frightened and can’t find their way home.

This is where GPS tracker technology can be very helpful. You can track your pet’s movements using a GPS tracking devices that is transported in a pouch that was specially designed to be attached to an animal collar, so it goes wherever your pet goes. Rocky Mountain Tracking has one such tracking devices in its product lineup–the PT-200 for Pet Tracking.

Some people have opted to put have microchips implanted into some part of their pet’s body, but as RMT’s president Brad Borst points out, that may not be very helpful when it comes to finding your pet.

“Our goal with the PT-200 is to provide pet owners with peace of mind to ensure the safety of all animals. Microchips are being implanted in animals, but the microchips are only used to identify the animal. Microchips are not GPS locating devices, said Borst.” The PT-200 is most common for dog tracking, but it can be used to track small and large animals of all sizes.

Multiple PT-200 GPS tracking devices can be managed from one tracking account. So if you already have a PT-200 GPS tracking device, you can just add a device for your pet to the service that you already have.

You probably already have a system in place to keep track of what has gone where, but you can still use GPS tracking systems as a backup.

Measuring at about three inches, the PT-200 GPS device can be your eyes and travel with your assets when you cannot be there. It is so small that it can easily be hidden and works so well that you will wonder how you did without it.

This little GPS tracking device can aid in the tracking, security, and if necessary, recovery of your assets in real time or on demand. It even works in hard to reach places, such as inside trailers and deep inside closed packages. And it does all of this without using an external antenna.

The PT-200 gives notification when its battery is low, so you never have to guess. At the same time it has such a long battery life–running continuously for 10-21 days–that you will not have to worry about needing to change the batteries all that often.

When you use more than one PT-200, you will get color-coded history reports for each package.

In addition to using the PT-200 to track valuable assets and packages, you can also use it to keep track of your pets. Using the PT-200 with the PT-200 Pet Collar, ensures the safety your animal friend.
