A good detective embraces new technologies and Sherlock Holmes would have used every tool conceivable to prevent and/or solve a crime. You can too with today’s tool of choice – GPS tracking devices.

Now that things look like they might be in the early stages of improvement from a business standpoint, it is a good idea to assess how you are doing and if there are any other things you can do to protect your momentum. Theft not only robs you of assets that you need to run your business, but also that momentum that helps keep your outlook positive and your energy focused on the task at hand. Hard work pays off in the end, but you also could use some help from technology to maintain profitability. Since the early days of apprehending criminals via the style of Sherlock Holmes, we have reached a new level of hi-tech anti-theft solutions that are simple to use and maintain. Even Watson would embrace such a user-friendly technology. Here are some ideas to consider.

Secure and Prepare

Prepare for the worst and guard yourself against it. Using GPS Tracking devices help you not only locate your assets, but know where they are being used. When theft occurs, you feel cheated and it angers you. Someone has the audacity to steal something that you own and is using right now for themselves. That’s YOUR item – you paid good money for it. When you use GPS Tracking devices, you make it possible to track down that elusive item and find the perpetrators who did the stealing in the beginning. Let the police deal with them, paybacks through the criminal justice system have their own reward. Keep track of what you have now and keep your costs low. Recovery momentum will be maintained and your business will emerge a leader.

Squeeze Insurance Premiums

Many insurance companies will give you a break on your premiums if you can show that you are using a GPS Tracking device in your car. They like having their risk lowered by the actions of others. These lower costs will allow you to pay for the price of the unit and perhaps some locate fees when you need it most. Knowing that you are protecting your assets gives you a better rating with the insurance company in general. Think about combining that lower car insurance with your home insurance as well for added discounts. Position your expenses low. Keep your margins high. Fill that savings account and save for emergencies – both personal and professional. You will sleep better too!

Research, Compare and Purchase New Technology

Look to Rocky Mountain Tracking for assistance on which device to purchase. There are both passive and active types of devices. Really think about how the unit will be used now and in the future. Can you use this tracking device for other uses? Tracking an elderly parent? Recording speeds of a new teen driving? You have the ability to locate assets when needed. The cost of these units is surprisingly low. Just a few hundred dollars separates you from the ability to secure your assets in the fight against theft.

In these economic times we need to keep track of things that are important to our families and our businesses. As the economy turns around businesses that can run with what they have now will be better positioned to recover faster than other businesses that need to purchase new equipment. This includes our vehicles, construction equipment, various lost assets – you name it. We need to keep things close and under our watchful eye at all times. We no longer have our Sherlock Holmes and Assistant Watson on every street corner solving crimes. If you need assistance with “keeping an eye” on things – reach out to Rocky Mountain Tracking, Inc. We will introduce you to the world of gps tracking – your peace of mind solution for asset protection. Don’t worry – if lost – we will find it fast! Just get us involved to keep you in the game.

“The world is full of obvious things which nobody by any chance ever observes.” – from The Hound of the Baskervilles by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

A new growth market for GPS Tracking businesses lies in the area of offering GPS Tracking anti-theft services to companies who would rather pay to have the services performed rather than doing it themselves. And, if it makes financial sense, it is a win-win for both companies. Here are the principles that you need to know about and understand when looking for a company with which to do business in this manner.

How Long in Business?

While this might not be the best indicator, duration in business is still important. Start-up companies are looked upon as ‘fly-by-night’ operations that are here today and gone tomorrow. While this is an important factor that is weighed when choosing a business partner, it can be minimized by several other factors: How long have the owners lived in the community? What other business ventures might they own or have been involved in recently? The answers to these questions will help establish credibility if the duration of business operations falls short.

BBB Rating

While not completely infallible, the Better Business Bureau provides a barometer of how a business treats their customers and performs business overall. Watch out for this, however, because a newly minted business can get a good rating on the BBB if they have no bad marks against them in the early days and months of operation. Also, not everyone who has a bad experience will contact the BBB to report a business. Do not take this rating as the sole method of checking out a business. More investigation must be done.

Reference Checking

Get a listing of at least three customers that you can check with to see how they have been treated as a customer. Then, once you are finished with your interview, ask if they know of any other businesses who engage in business with the same company. This way, you will get an opinion from a business other than the one given to you. This is important and must not be skipped. Most people will be helpful and give you the good and the bad information to help you make an informed choice.

Trial Periods

Ask for a trial period to use services so that you can assess whether or not they are good at follow up and responsiveness. If you have many assets that you need to be tracked via GPS Tracking, ask to outfit one or two just to be able to see if it is going to meet your goals for monitoring. Most companies offer a sneak peak of their operations.

What Sets this Particular Business Apart from Others?

Find out what makes this business different from others that are doing the same thing. What approach do they take towards customer service? Do you have adequate and effective means for problem resolution? What other services do they offer? How good is their mapping software and is it up and running 100%?

GPS Tracking systems are here to stay and you can be successful if you purchase one and implement it yourself. But, if it makes sense, a GPS Tracking business can provide even better services at a very cost-effective price point. Check it out and see if it is right for you. Use due diligence in your research and you won’t be disappointed!

Theft of equipment from construction sites is occurring at an alarming rate. So much so, that construction firms have embraced the use of GPS Tracking devices to help them recover expensive equipment quickly.

Construction & GPS Tracking

The poor economy is partly to blame for the rise in incidents of theft. But beyond that is the fact that there are more opportunists out there that are looking for ways to make a quick dollar – even on larger expensive items. GPS Tracking systems are playing a large part in helping to solve these incidents. Here are the ways that they are helping.

Web-based Locate is Accurate and Efficient

With a device attached to an asset, the location can be viewed on a computer screen at any time (as long as it is a device that is on all of the time, an active system, and can be tracked in real-time.) This alone is a good feature, but there is one better: geo-fencing. With this feature enabled, you can get a text alert or email message if your asset is moved outside of a boundary that you set on a map on your computer. Since early morning thefts are common, these boundaries protect your assets while you sleep. Stealth and quickness are the two biggest advantages of using these devices. Getting your equipment back fast helps you to keep your business running and will ultimately result in less damage to the asset.

Manage Multiple Assets with the Click of your Mouse

If you are a large contractor, then you are more vulnerable than smaller ones. The more pieces of equipment that you are required to watch and maintain, the more chances that theft can and will occur just by sheer numbers. Now you can manage all of your equipment from one computer. Perform a simple inventory in minutes. Know where your equipment is and who should be using it by location.

Many Types: Battery, Hard Wired, Magnetized Installations

If the equipment is big enough, it can be tracked. Many tracking devices have batteries that can run for days between charges. Others can use existing 12 volt systems to keep them under power (and use the internal battery as a backup). Vehicles are the most popular items to track but also heavy duty equipment like tractors, graders, bulldozers, skid loaders, etc, can all be outfitted with a device. And, since these devices are relatively inexpensive compared to the price of the item, it is worth the time and trouble to protect it. The problems theft brings can slow down the whole project and put you thousands of dollars behind schedule!

Reducing Theft Risk Reduces Your Insurance Premiums

Risk reduction is important to insurance companies and with GPS Tracking devices, they can achieve that goal better than ever right now. So, chances are high that your insurance premiums will go down as a direct result of implementing these units on your equipment. Making the decision to outfit your entire fleet of assets with GPS Tracking devices is one that you will not regret. Knowing expensive asset locations helps manage projects, keeps insurance companies happy and keeps thieves away. GPS Tracking plays a large role in protecting construction sites. Smart firms embrace Gps technology and are proactive against thieves!

It’s a sign of the times; police are turning up the heat on marijuana users. On one hand, this is a good thing because this ‘gateway’ drug leads to even more drug use and the evils that infect a society when it runs rampant. But now, police departments are so strapped for cash that they are increasing their activities to arrest those with the drug so that they can bring in needed revenues to their departments.

Smoke Pot - Get Busted

You will also find increases in patrols to catch and ticket those with simple moving violations such as speeding tickets.

Reasons:

Lower Tax Revenues

Because of high unemployment, decreased tax has caused a financial crunch for most city governments. Once considered essential services are now being cut in favor of trying to balance the budget. Police and fire/rescue departments are not immune from these actions, either. This reality has forced many law enforcement departments to search for alternative ways to fund their budgets.

While technologies like GPS Tracking systems have helped police solve crimes sooner and with fewer resources, even they are not enough to close the short-fall.

Federal Funding for Anti-Drug Programs

One of the main sources of income for departments is from federal programs. These include ant-drug programs (among others) which help finance the efforts to prosecute illegal drug activities. Police are turning to these programs in greater numbers by increasing the activities to find and prosecute all activities relating to marijuana use.

By putting an emphasis on prosecuting these activities, the departments get federal funding, while increasing court revenues from cases that are generated. It’s a win-win for the justice system.

The best and ONLY way to protect yourself from this type of activity is to stay away from drugs – completely.

But, beware of activities like watching more closely for traffic infractions which fall into the same category. You can protect yourself by always obeying traffic laws. In addition to this, adding a GPS Tracking device to your vehicle can help you if you are cited for a moving violation.

GPS Tracking devices can help monitor your speed, direction of travel and location. This information has been deemed admissible in a court of law and can help you defend yourself.

A sane society continues the war on drugs by fighting on a day to day basis in our communities. A sane citizen protects him/herself by using knowledge and technology to keep from becoming a victim.

Car Safety

When discussing car safety and auto-theft protection many experts will usually discuss GPS tracking systems, car alarms or more simple steps such as parking a vehicle in the garage or locking doors. The experts will usually share statistics about the increase in car burglaries, and some helpful tips on how to prevent the problem.

GPS & Auto Theft

Taking a more hands-on approach to the problem with car-theft and burglary, the Houston Police Department decided to give people a demonstration on how quickly and efficiently the bad guys operate. With the assistance of State Farm Insurance, who provided the police a demo vehicle, the Houston Police staged a mock break-in.

How the demonstration worked was outside of city hall some city officials gathered in a parking lot. An officer, dressed as a civilian, played the role of a car burglar. As the pseudo car burglar approached the vehicle he tapped the passenger windshield with a tool that caused the window to spider web crack. This made little to no noise, surprising many of the people viewing the demonstration. The pseudo car burglar then quickly brushed away the glass and stole items that were inside the vehicle, showing the audience how quick and easy it is for a bad guy to enter a vehicle without causing a scene.

The Houston Police also stated that the car burglar could have easily hot-wired the vehicle and stole the automobile just as easily.

The point of the demonstration was to draw attention to the fact that in Houston nearly half of all burglaries are auto-related incidents. Car burglars will often spot laptops, computer equipment, GPS navigation devices or other valuables. They then target these vehicles late at night.

Although police have stated that it can be difficult to completely stop these acts of criminal behavior, they have expressed that the use of GPS tracking devices and car alarm systems can help prevent the likelihood of the vehicle being stolen.

By Greg Bartlett

Thousands of vehicles are stolen each year, and only a handful of them are recovered. Many people are left with a stressful problem when their vehicle is stolen. Vehicular theft is a growing problem in many areas, and people are unaware of this problem, or they think that they are immune to this problem. Vehicles are commonly stolen, and they can be very difficult to locate. This epidemic is getting solved through vehicle recovery systems that allow vehicle owners to track their vehicle using state of the art GPS tracking technologies.

Stolen Vehicle & GPS

People love gps tracking technology, and some of the people that use it have testified that it has helped them recover their car when it was stolen. This technology uses satellites to find the position of your car, and can help pinpoint the location of your car to within just a few feet. With the help of gps satellite tracking, police can solve missing vehicles and criminals much faster.

Cars are stolen on a regular basis, and most people are left filling out paperwork with insurance companies for the cost of their missing vehicle. People that have vehicle recovery technology can use it to make this process quick and relatively painless. Many people fear this dreadful crime, but most believe that they are immune. Car thieves regularly steal high ticket cars that are very expensive, and this type of GPS tracking can save car owners time, money, and a large amount of stress.

GPS tracking has assisted people in recovering their vehicles within hours of losing them. This technology can help people that are in a tough situation, and being able to locate their asset quickly gives them peace of mind, and they would agree that this new and expanding technology is well worth it.

by Greg Bartlett

GPS tracking devices are extremely helpful to both families and businesses. Some first-time GPS shoppers may not understand what all can be done with this exciting technology, so here are 5 common ways that GPS trackers are used successfully by both businesses and consumers.

GPS Tracking for Success

Protecting your family

GPS tracking can be used to track those who are most important to you: your spouse and kids. This can be done either through cell phone trackers, or dedicated devices that can be placed on individuals. These devices, like most GPS trackers, almost always come with software or access to a secure website that allows you to see where your family members are.

Preventing car theft

GPS car trackers can be easily placed in a discreet place in your vehicle so that you can always keep track of where it is located using the tracker’s software. Many of these devices allow you to hook the tracker up to the car’s battery, so that the tracker never needs recharging. These devices have already resulted in the quick recovery of many stolen vehicles, as the police can use the tracking signal to find the vehicle’s location soon after it is reported to them.

Encourage safe driving

GPS car trackers can also be used to help teen drivers practice safe driving skills. Devices that are created for this purpose not only track the location of vehicle, but can also track the speed, and sometimes the acceleration of the vehicle. Some devices even contain a “speed cap” that will not allow the car to go faster than a speed that parents set. Since teens driving GPS tracked cars know that their driving is being watched by their parents, studies show that they often drive much safer and have fewer accidents than untracked cars.

Increasing worker productivity

In the business world, countless billions of dollars are lost every year to lost productivity. Lost productivity can be especially high with workers who travel to off-site locations to do work. They can use company vehicles for personal use, get lost on the way to jobs, and otherwise waste precious company time and fuel. GPS tracking can be used to keep these workers accountable, much like it is used to track teenage drivers. Workers who know their bosses are watching them often work better than they would otherwise, as studies repeatedly show.

Company asset protection

GPS tracking devices can also be discreetly placed on larger or transportable company assets, such as company vehicles, construction equipment, laptop computers, etc. These items often represent thousands of dollars of company money. Company laptops, of course, can contain priceless company information, records, and industry secrets that are so valuable that a company must recover them or risk the information falling into the wrong hands.

GPS tracking is a solution to many problems faced by the modern company and family, and is well worth the minimal investment.

Trust is a difficult thing to come by. And all it takes is one mistake or misstep to lose that trust in someone…instantly. Sometimes that break in trust is simply a misunderstanding. If this is the case, the only way to fix it is with first-hand knowledge. As you seek to gain that first-hand knowledge, you may not want the other person to know that you are “investigating” them. One really easy way to investigate and gather information discreetly is by using a GPS tracking device. So whether it is a wayward teenager or a wandering spouse, you can easily find out what it is that they are “up to.”

GPS Tracking & Investigative Work

You will need a real time GPS tracking device that you can install on a car or on a person. The real time GPS tracking device can provide the exact location of the vehicle or person. The device can also show the travel route that the car or person is taking, as well as any stops made along the way. This feature is especially helpful to check on that teen or spouse’s story. Did your teenager really go to the library? Or did your spouse really work late every Thursday of the month? Use a GPS tracking device to help you find out the truth and regain trust.

GPS tracking devices operate with the help of satellites that are orbiting the earth every day. These satellites receive information from the GPS tracking devices, and they, in turn, send the information back to the owner and operator of the device. The owner of the device can check the location and the travel route of the device on any web enabled device like a cell phone or a computer. There are a few real time devices that are well known for their excellent performance, helpful features, and low cost.

The PT-200 by Rocky Mountain Tracking is one of these popular devices. It is small, portable, and it is easily hidden on any type of asset – person, vehicle, or an item of value. It also has the long battery live of between 10 to 21 days left on continuously. Another reputable device is the Smart Tracker. The Smart Tracker is intended only for use on vehicles, and you only pay for service when you need it. There are no activation fees, and it is one of the best trackers out there for vehicle recovery. You can definitely count on GPS tracking devices to give you the information you need to restore trust – discreetly.

By Harriette Halepis

Source acquired via Bronx Times, June 3, 2010, New York – he may not be able to climb buildings and he doesn’t wear a red and blue suit, but retired NYPD Lieutenant Anthony Amelio is nothing short of a neighborhood hero. On the morning of May 22, 2010, Amelio chased a GPS thief down three streets until he finally caught him, held him, and waiting for the 49th Precinct to arrive.

GPS Tracking & Vehicle Theft

Amelio was already awake around 4:30 a.m. when he saw a car thief break into his neighbour’s Jeep. Upon spotting the thief, Amelio went out to where the thief was standing, and “…gave two commands: Police! Don’t Shoot!” At the time, Amelio was wearing a retired police officer identification around his neck, though the criminal did not heed Amelio’s warning. Instead, the robber ran away from the scene with Amelio hot on his trail.

As Amelio attempted to capture the thief, his wife dialled 911 in order to alert police. Amelio eventually caught up with 40-year-old Napoleon Cirera, and he was able to detain him until police arrived. Cirera was charged with auto stripping, possession of stolen property, petty larceny, and other offenses. As for Amelio, he was simply happy that he was able to catch the thief. The retired lieutenant told press that apprehending Cirera was “…a quality of life issue. You don’t want to come out of your home and find that someone has broken into your vehicle.”

Cirera was searching for cars that had visible GPS navigation units inside of them. These units can be easily stripped from cars and sold on the black market. This is precisely why Cirera was intending to do when Amelio caught him. Police believe that Cirera may have been responsible for a number of thefts that have taken place within Amelio’s area over the past few months. Police are warning people who own GPS navigation units to hide these units from plain sight.

While most GPS mapping units that are stolen are never recovered, installing a GPS tracking device on the unit is one way to prevent a thief from stealing this piece of equipment. Since most people do not have retired NYPD lieutenants living next door, a GPS tracking device is the next best thing. In this case, Amelio’s neighbor, Peter Enea, was fortunate to live next to someone as heroic as Amelio. Cirera will be sentenced by a New York court within the next few weeks.

Have you ever misplaced money? Have you lost that $10 that you thought sure you had placed in your wallet or purse? Have you had money stolen from you whether or not you were aware of it?

Following Money with GPS Tracking

GPS tracking is an effective and efficient means of locating lost or stolen people, animals, goods, or money. It is different from GPS navigation commonly found in motor vehicles. A GPS tracking device may be placed on a person or item, allowing you to find that person or item. A GPS (global positioning system) tracking device works together with one of twenty-four satellites located above the earth to pinpoint and locate a person or item in real-time and track their movements. Once the signal is sent to the GPS-enabled tracking device (e.g., navigation system), that person knows the precise location of his/her asset.

You may have recently heard about how GPS tracking allowed police to capture two bank robbers who stole cash from the Bank of North Georgia. Police did not know the suspects and had conflicting reports regarding the getaway vehicle. Eyewitnesses told Hiram police that the suspects fled in a black SUV. Using a strategically-placed GPS tracking device in the stolen money, police followed the money to an Atlanta townhouse complex. The money did not move at that point. Hiram and Atlanta police moved in on the townhouse and located and arrested 23-year old Vernon Keith McDougal and 39-year old Jemal D. Coleman. Police were skeptical because a gold Nissan (not a black SUV) was parked outside. But police arrested the two thieves and placed them in the Paulding County jail.

In this particular case, the GPS tracking device placed inside the money by a brave and courageous teller established a signal with one of the satellites located outside the earth. These satellites cover most areas around the world. These twenty-four satellites are arranged so that four are placed within each of the six orbital planes of the earth. Once Hiram and Atlanta police took out their GPS-enabled devices (e.g., laptop computer, cell phone, etc.) and started receiving signals on their map, the police could track the movement of the money and trace it to the Atlanta townhouse in which they located and arrested the suspects. A GPS tracking device is the best answer for locating lost or stolen people, money, animals, and goods.
