A NEW CAR FOR GRADUATION

Posted on Monday 14 January 2008

It seems a little unfair that 18th birthdays often fall so close to high school graduation. Suddenly our children are regarded by the world as responsible adults. Combine this with the newfound feeling of freedom that goes with the ending of compulsory education and it’s a dynamite high! The sobering sense of responsibility often waits to catch up with us later. In one case recently this was the stuff of tragedy. A new car for a graduation present, two couples riding around in the new car, wild parties, alcohol – a scenario too familiar. These four young revelers didn’t come home that night. For over a week police, frantic family, and friends searched every possible location without finding any trace of them. Then one day, a week later, a runner along a quiet stretch of road heard what she thought was a groan coming from the thicket of underbrush at the bottom of a steep embankment off the side of the road. The rest is history. One of the young foursome was somehow still alive. Three others were not lucky. Perhaps if they had been spotted earlier the story would have been different.
