Saying NO!!! to pressure from their friends is probably the hardest thing for a kid to do. Let’s face it – it’s hard for us adults to resist temptation often, but our temptations aren’t often as lethal as the temptations constantly being whispered into the ears of our children. By their peers. Besides, we’re armed with understanding of the consequences if we give in to temptations and that understanding is usually enough to keep us on the straight and narrow. But explaining the dangers of drug use to the young doesn’t usually seem to cut it. They don’t have the experience to feel what addiction is like, or how it feels to be in a car that has just gone over the side of the road because the driver lost control. Parenting seems to get harder as possibilities for harm multiply and their ability to watch over and control their teenagers get weakened. We’re hearing more about tough love these days and instead of moralizing with our kids, we’re seeing Moms (Dads too) threatening with graphic clarity the consequences they will visit on them for infractions on the rules they’ve laid down.
