Covert Places to Install the Tracking Key
Hiding a GPS from plain view isn’t difficult. In fact, most GPS trackers are hidden from view. To find a spot that nobody will detect, consider the layout of your vehicle. It’s also a good idea to think about where the person (or persons) who use the vehicle daily will sit. Below, you will find some covert places to install a GPS tracker.
- Underneath the dash pad. Most people will not look in this area for a GPS tracker.
- Behind the steering column
- Between a vehicle’s grill and radiator (avoid heat)
- Underneath passenger and driver side seats

Passive GPS Devices Provide Accurate GPS Data
GPS devices are designed for many purposes and for different operations. GPS covert tracking can be done in a passive mode, meaning data is recorded for checking later. GPS tracking data can also be collected in real time, as when tracking a stolen vehicle. One of the more popular passive covert GPS devices is the Tracking Key from Rocky Mountain Tracking.
These are among the smallest covert GPS devices on the market. The Tracking Key can be secretly placed in the car, where it sits idle until the car is started and placed in motion. Motion sensors activate the covert gps tracker data recorder which stores data in a flash drive that can be plugged into any Windows based computer later and downloaded. These concealed GPS devices are also among the least expensive.
One of the advantages of the Tracking Key is that there are no monthly fees for monitoring. These hidden GPS devices operate on the power of two "AAA" batteries and only record when the vehicle is in motion. The batteries can last up to four weeks under normal operating conditions. The GPS data is stored in a nonvolatile format, meaning it will not be lost if the batteries go dead. Most covert GPS devices require storage of data elsewhere to prevent loss.
The accuracy of the Tracking Key is quite good, within 2.5 meters horizontally. Among hidden GPS devices, this is very good, and is definitely good enough to provide accurate GPS data on the stops made in the vehicle while the Tracking Key is recording. Time information is pulled from the GPS satellites at the same time as location data, making the time logs as accurate as possible too.
One unique feature normally reserved for covert GPS devices that require a monitoring contract is the detailed mapping of GPS data and the ability to change views as needed. Maps can be generated from a global perspective, a bird's eye view, or even three dimensional representations with an animated car following the route driven.
